British man dies in fall from balcony in Menorca

A British holidaymaker has died after falling from a balcony on the Spanish island of Menorca.

Paul Clough, 41, died in hospital last Sunday after falling from the balcony of his apartment the previous day.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the hospitalisation and subsequent death of a British national following a balcony fall in Menorca."

The Mail on Sunday said he fell through a gap in the balcony.

The newspaper said he suffered internal injuries after falling from the third-floor balcony in the resort of Ciutadella.

Mr Clough is the latest of several Britons to have died in falls in the Balearic Islands this year.

In April roofer Benjamin Harper, 28, from Twickenham, south-west London, fell from a hotel balcony in Magaluf, Majorca.

Three days earlier another holidaymaker, 20-year-old Adam Atkinson, from Castleford, West Yorkshire, died in Magaluf after apparently falling down a staircase.

In May 23-year-old Charlotte Faris, from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, died in a fall from a hotel in Magaluf.

In August a campaign was launched in an effort to curb such accidents.

Paul Abrey, British consul in the Balearics, said: "Some people have fallen whilst climbing to a friend's apartment, others have simply lost their footing after a few too many drinks and a few have deliberately jumped off aiming for the pool below."
