In pictures: Hugo Chavez wins Venezuelan presidency
Hugo Chavez has won his fourth term in office as president of Venezuela. He pumped the air with his fists from the balcony of the Miraflores Palace in Caracas after the result was announced.
Smoke from fireworks set off in celebration hung in the air as thousands of Mr Chavez's supporters thronged the square beneath.
Crowds roared and celebrated as he told them that Venezuela's democracy was one of the best in the world.
Mr Chavez's victory, with 54% of the vote, came just months after cancer treatment took him out of the limelight.
His rival, opposition candidate Henrique Capriles, had campaigned on a platform of improving security and fighting corruption. Mr Capriles finished with just under 45% of the vote.
The race was seen as the closest election in 14 years. A Twitter hashtag #comiendounas, which translates as BitingNails, became the most popular in Venezuela as people waited for the results to become clear.
