A man has been injured in a shooting in Newry, County Down.

The 25-year-old was shot in both ankles in Ardcarn Park shortly before 21:00 BST on Monday.

He was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital but later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA, Dominic Bradley, has condemned the attack and urged anyone with information to go to the police.

He said: "No one has the right to take the law into their own hands in so-called 'punishment shootings' which by this time should be consigned to the past.

"The police service is there to enforce the law and that has to be done in open court through evidence gathered," Mr Bradley added.
