Labour Jon Cruddas MP banned from driving

An MP who drove with no insurance and an expired MoT certificate has been banned from the roads.

Jon Cruddas, 50, Labour MP for Dagenham and Rainham in east London, was arrested in July and pleaded guilty at Westminster magistrates earlier.

He was disqualified from driving for eight weeks, fined £200 and told to pay £85 costs and a £15 surcharge.

Mr Cruddas told the BBC it was "totally fair" he was banned.

The shadow cabinet member, who became co-ordinator of Labour's policy review earlier this year, said: "I thought I had a week left to renew. It's totally fair enough. I pleaded guilty."

A Labour party source said: "Jon made a simple mistake. It was human error. He is very sorry."
