A writer's life - Peter Bowker

Peter Bowker grew up in Hazel Grove, Stockport in the north west of England.

 

He went to school at Marple Hall before moving on to Leeds University where he studied English and Philosophy.

 

Peter also studied teacher training at Leeds Polytechnic and was a student on the University of East Anglia's creative writing course.

 

His latest BBC TV drama series is From There To Here starring Philip Glenister, Liz White, Steven Mackintosh, Saskia Reeves and Daniel Rigby. He calls this £3m family drama a "love letter to Manchester, warts and all". The drama starts with the IRA bombing of Manchester during Euro 96 and looks at its impact on two families.

 

His next drama will be Marvellous on BBC Two based on the extraordinary real-life story of Neil Baldwin, a man with learning difficulties who has worked as a circus clown, lay preacher and Stoke City's kit man.

 

Peter Bowker's drama work includes Eric and Ernie which won Best Single Drama & Best Writer at the RTS Awards in 2012. Peter also won Best Writer in the BAFTA Craft Awards for this programme.

 

The three-part drama series Occupation was another award winning production starring James Nesbitt based around the backdrop of the Iraq War.

 

Viva Blackpool (2006) was a single drama starring David Morrissey which was followed by the highly acclaimed six-part series Blackpool featuring David Morrissey, David Tennant and Sarah Parish.

 

One of his breakthrough dramas was Flesh and Blood starring Christopher Eccleston in 2002 for which he also won an RTS Award for Best Writer.

 

Other work includes Clocking Off (2002), Buried Treasure (2001), The King and Us (2002) and The Uninvited (1997).

 

An early drama series for the BBC was Undercover Heart in 1998 which extended across six episodes.

 

Peter also worked on Peak Practice (1994), Casualty (1991/7) and Medics (1993) in his early career.
