LatAm Beats: Ana Tijoux

Chilean hip hop artist Ana Tijoux is winning fans at home and abroad with her Latin rhythms and socially engaged lyrics.

In the first episode of a new series showcasing Latin American musical talent, she performs Vengo. It is a song about indigenous pride, urging Chileans to celebrate their Indian roots, including their black hair and high cheekbones.

Ms Tijoux's parents were exiles from former president Augusto Pinochet's Chile, and she has taken part in numerous campaigns against inequality and oppression worldwide.

Her second album, 1977, released in 2009, saw her gain international recognition. Thom Yorke, lead singer of Radiohead, named it among his favourites, and it was used in the soundtrack for the US TV drama Breaking Bad.
