It was so nearly two gold medals for England in 10 minutes in the pool. Siobhan O'Connor led at the halfway point of the women's 100m butterfly, but is pipped just metres from the wall as Canada's Katerine Savard comes through to take the victory by five one-hundredths.

Teenager Siobhan O'Connor, from Bath, Somerset, has already claimed two silver medals in Glasgow - in the 200m freestyle and 4 x 100m freestyle relay - and will be hoping it is third time lucky in tonight's 100m butterfly final.

O'Connor, 18, was one of the nominees for the 2012 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award.

  33. Swimming

    Women's 100m butterfly

  34. Gold Medal

    Chris Walker-Hebborn (England) - 100m backstroke swimming

    Chris Walker-Hebborn (England)

Make that two gold medals for England. Chris Walker-Hebborn smashes the Commonwealth Games record to take the victory in the 100m backstroke. We mentioned Liam Tancock earlier, and he now has eight Commonwealth Games medals. He finishes tied third.

Australia's Mitch Larkin wins silver, while countryman Josh Beaver gets a share of bronze.

  35. Swimming

    Men's 100m backstroke final

Our next action is the men's 100m backstroke final. Australia have won half of the gold medals available in the pool so far, with five successes in 10 races. They have won a total of 12 medals at the Tollcross Swimming Centre, including four silvers and three bronze medals.

Scotland have won five medals, including three golds, while Ben Proud's victory in the 50m butterfly is England's only success so far.

  36. Boxing

    Neil Johnston

    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"Take that! Northern Ireland's Steven Donnelly requires just 37 seconds to see off Pakistan's Hasan Asif in their welterweight (69 kg) bout.

"What a mismatch. Donnelly has his opponent on his back on the canvas in the opening 15 seconds and the referee stops the contest after Asif is caught again.

"It's fair to say it's been a decent day for Northern Ireland in the ring after Michael Conlan fought on with a nasty cut to beat Nauru's Mathew Martin and advance in the men's bantamweight (56kg)."

    Michael Conlan
  37. Hockey

Trinidad and Tobago in action at Glasgow National Hockey Centre

Trinidad and Tobago were beaten 16-0 by South Africa in the women's hockey yesterday. They have done better today... just. They conceded just 14 goals as they fell to another defeat to New Zealand. Ouch.

Northern Ireland have just finished their Pool A match with Jamaica and fell to a 65-34 defeat.

  40. Medal Ceremony

    Men's 400m individual medley swimming

Daniel Wallace, 21, points to a cheering public as he stands on the top of the podium. He has been so calm up to now. But seeing the Scotland flag rising and the crowd singing 'Flower of Scotland' brings a lump to his throat and a tear to his eye.

I'm sure he is not the only Scot crying at the moment. Emotional scenes, but memorable ones, in the pool. Wallace's success is Scotland's third swimming gold medal of this Commonwealth Games and their fifth medal overall in the pool.

  45. Swimming

    Aimee Lewis

    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"What. A. Roar. The Scottish crowd enjoyed that and so did Daniel Wallace. The powerful Scot made his competitors look like tug boats. He sits on the ropes and encourages the supporters to roar some more, which is fine and dandy but I will need a ear test after this evening."

  46. Gold Medal

    Maddison Elliott (Australia) - Women's 100m freestyle S8 swimming

    Maddison Elliott

Fifteen-year-old Maddison Elliott takes gold in the women's 100m freestyle S8 event. The Australian is hugely emotional as she breaks down in tears after the victory. In an incredible performance, Elliott also breaks the world record.

There is another medal for England as Steph Slater (see 20:34) wins silver.

    Men's 400m individual medley

Men's 400m individual medley gold medallist Daniel Wallace tells BBC Sport: "I knew where I needed to be at each point. It was a dogfight to the finish but I'm really happy. It's not every day you get to race and win in front of your home crowd."

  50. Gold Medal

Daniel Wallace (Scotland) - Men's 400m individual medley

    Daniel Wallace

What a Commonwealth Games this is for Scotland. Daniel Wallace takes gold in the pool in the men's 400m individual medley.

He was well behind with 50m remaining but, with the home fans screaming their support, Wallace burst through to touch first. He screams out in delight and smashes both arms into the water in an emotional celebration.

Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes, a gold medallist in the 200m freestyle, finishes second, with Sebastien Rousseau of South Africa third.

  51. Judo

    Champion's emotional tribute

    Megan Fletcher

Judo gold medallist Megan Fletcher, a geography teacher in Bristol, broke down as she paid tribute to her late former coach Don Werner, who passed away earlier this year from cancer.

She said: "Everything I do now, he taught me, so I will always be grateful to him, and hopefully he would be proud."

The 24-year-old was cheered on by younger brother Ben, whose knee injury robbed him of the chance of competing at the Games.

She added: "I saw Ben after the semi-final and we had a little bit of an emotional moment. It was so disappointing for us as a family to be so close to coming here and Ben could have won it, but he is such a strong-minded person that I know in the future he will be one to watch."

  52. Swimming

    Para-sport 100m freestyle

    Stephanie Slater

England's Steph Slater will be bidding for a first Commonwealth medal in this evening's Para-sport 100m freestyle final but the road to Glasgow has been less than straightforward for the Preston swimmer.

She was a talented able-bodied swimmer before suffering pain and numbness in her arm during a training session, later diagnosed as damage to the lower part of her brachial plexus - the network of nerves that conducts signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand.

It meant she was unable to use her arm again and now swims using just her right arm.

You can read more about Slater's story back to the pool here.

  53. Swimming

    Women's 100m backstroke

Wales' Georgia Davies tells BBC Sport after reaching the final of the 100m backstroke: "I've been chasing that personal best for a while so I am thrilled with that. I felt pretty rusty in the heats this morning and bit nervous. I'm really looking forward to the final tomorrow now."

  54. Swimming

    Men's 400m individual medley

Are you keeping up? Don't worry, we won't be asking any questions later. The next final is up shortly. This one is the men's 400m individual medley.

  55. Boxing

    Men's welterweight (69kg)

    Neil Johnston

    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"The conditions are so stifling inside the SECC precinct that India's Mandeep Jangra had someone waving a towel in front of him to cool him down between rounds while facing Mozambique's Augusto Mathule.

"It worked. Jangra lives to fight another day after easing through in the welterweight (69kg) class without barely breaking sweat."

  56. Swimming

    Women's 100m backstroke

    Karen Pickering

BBC Sport aquatic sports expert & ex-CWG champion

"Georgia Davies comes out of that with a lot of credit. She was under the 60-second barrier and is the second fastest into the final so she's really found some form."

  57. Swimming

    Women's 100m backstroke

Lizzie Simmonds and Lauren Quigley are joined in the women's 100m backstroke final by Welsh swimmer Georgia Davies, after she comes second in her semi-final.

  58. Swimming

    Women's 100m backstroke

England's Lizzie Simmonds tells BBC Sport after reaching the final of the 100m backstroke: "I blew the cobwebs away this morning and I feel good. It's great to know that I'm a bit ahead of the field with the starts and turns."

Graeme Obree and Billy Connolly with Sir Chris Hoy

Sir Chris Hoy seems to be at every event in Glasgow. Here he is with fellow Scot and cyclist Graeme Obree, also known as the Flying Scotsman after twice breaking the world hour record, and comedian Billy Connolly. He tweets: "Me and two of my heroes. Graeme Obree and the Big Yin!"

  60. Swimming

    Women's 100m backstroke

    Adrian Moorhouse

  61. Swimming

    Women's 100m backstroke

England's Lizzie Simmonds, who won the European Championship in 2010 in the 200m backstroke final, advances into the final of the 100m event.

Her team-mate Lauren Quigley, 19, can also prepare for an appearance in Saturday's final after coming third in the first semi-final.

  62. Swimming

    Men's 100m breaststroke

England's Adam Peaty tells BBC Sport after reaching the final of the 100m breaststroke: "I think there is more to come from me. I'm still getting used to the arena. I'm training hard at the moment and enjoying it."

  63. Swimming

    Men's 100m breaststroke

But Ross Murdoch might not have it his own way in the final. England's Adam Peaty wins the second semi-final of the men's 100m breaststroke in a new Commonwealth Games record.

However, there is more bad news for Michael Jamieson as he fails to qualify for the final. He was the poster boy ahead of the Games, but, by his standards, is having a hugely disappointing competition in his home country.

  64. Swimming

Scotland's Ross Murdoch, pictured next to Michael Jamieson, tells BBC Sport after winning his 100m breaststroke semi-final: "I feel fresh and good. 65. Swimming

    Men's 100m breaststroke

    Karen Pickering

"Not a quick time from Michael Jamieson, but Ross Murdoch not put off by the big names to get through. He's so smooth at the finish."

  66. Swimming

    Men's 100m breaststroke

Scotland fans cheer during the evening session at Tollcross International Swimming Centre

Yesterday's hero Ross Murdoch is walking with a swagger and rightly so after his gold medal in the 200m breaststroke. The home crowd are in good voice and on their feet again as he wins his semi-final of the 100m breaststroke.

Murdoch defeated Olympic Games silver medallist Michael Jamieson yesterday, who had to settle for another silver. But Jamieson can only finish fifth in the 100m semi-final and faces an anxious wait to see if he is in the final.

  67. Swimming

    Women's 50m freestyle semi-final

England's Fran Halsall tells BBC Sport after winning her 50m freestyle semi-final: "I stuck to my race plan and did what I needed to do. Can I go sub-24? That would be nice! I don't want to tempt fate but I feel a lot stronger so technically I should be faster."

  68. Swimming

    Women's 50m freestyle semi-final

    Karen Pickering

BBC Sport aquatic sports expert & ex-CWG champion

"A new Commonwealth Games record from Fran Halsall. That's the Fran of old and back to her best. When she's in form she's almost skimming across the water."

  69. Swimming

    Women's 50m freestyle

England's Fran Halsall and Amy Smith, who were both part of the quartet that claimed a silver medal in the women's 4 x 100m freestyle relay, have both qualified for the final of the 50m freestyle event.

Australia's Cate Campbell set a new Commonwealth Games record by winning the first semi-final in a time of 24.17 seconds.

But records come and records go and Campbell's reign only lasted five minutes, before Halsall won the second semi-final in a time of 24.14. Scotland's Sian Harkin scrapes into the final as eighth fastest qualifier.

  72. Boxing

    Men's flyweight 52kg

Welsh flyweight Andrew Selby is in shock following his defeat by Scotland's Reece McFadden. Selby, top of the amateur world rankings, got a warning from the referee after the gum shield twice came out of his mouth during the three-round contest.

The Welshman tells BBC One: "I lost the first round, I won the second. I wasn't spitting my gum shield out deliberately, it's not my fault. Why would I spit it out? I came here to fight.

"He boxed well in the first round, but I knew he was going to run away from me. I thought I was coming back in the third round but got caught trying to attack."

It's a fast and frantic night in the pool. The next person to be celebrating is Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes, who takes gold in the men's 200m freestyle final.

Cameron McEvoy, also of Australia, claims the silver, but there is a bronze medal for Wales' Calum Jarvis. That is the first ever medal for Wales in this event, so well done Calum, great effort.

With 50m left, it looked like being an Australia 1-2-3, but Jarvis produced a late surge to finish third.

  83. Bronze Medal

Zambia are up on the board in the Commonwealth Games. Boas Munyonga has just beaten Canada's Louis Krieber-Gagnon in a bronze medal contest in the men's -81kg judo. It is a popular medal in the judo arena as well.

"Almost six hundred people play judo in Zambia. I saw people playing when I was young and got interested. At first, I was scared but I got interested.

"At 19, McFadden is six years younger than Selby but he produces a mature performance to go through by an unanimous points decision.

"This lad is popular. The place is packed and the whole arena are out of their seats, some waving Scottish flags, while McFadden, dressed all in red, laps up the attention and bows to the crowd."

That is three golds now for the hosts.

  108. Badminton

Everywhere you look at these Commonwealth Games there are incredible stories of courage and against-all-odds tales. With his shaven head and a body full of tattoos England's Danny Williams does not look like a man with whom you mess. New Zealand's Adrian Leat attempted just that and came off second best in a bruising contest for gold. Women's: New Zealand v Trinidad and Tobago (19:00 BST)

No one likes their team getting a hiding. You turn up for a game hopeful of a good performance only to see them fall apart and get humiliated.

Well spare a thought for fans and players of the Trinidad and Tobago women's hockey side, who were thrashed 16-0 (yes, SIXTEEN) by South Africa on Thursday. As a comparison, no other team conceded more than six goals in one match as Trinidad's men kept the score down to a 6-1 loss to England.

But today is a new day. Today, Trinidad's women side take on the might that is New Zealand (19:00 BST), the 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallists and the strongest team in the group. Let's hope the officials can keep count.

BBC Sport's Ollie Williams continues his attempt to interview an athlete from each of the 71 Commonwealth countries.

    NINE - Gareth Evans, Wales

You will see no better celebration than the fist-pumping roar from Gareth Evans as he won Group B of the men's 62kg weightlifting.

    Gareth Evans

"That meant massive amounts," said the ninth inductee to the #71Club, who was 17th at London 2012. "I've pulled on my country's lifting suit in front of my friends, my family and all the wonderful people that were here supporting today."

Explaining his flamboyant approach, he said: "People don't pay money to watch someone pick up a weight, put it down and walk back like it's not bothering them. People want to be entertained by people lifting weights, and I like entertaining people lifting weights. I stand up, I look somewhere, I do my jerk and then it's party time."

The Hoydrome, bouncing all afternoon, falls briefly silent - all but one small all-black corner. Kenny has been bulking up since failing to pick up a medal at the Worlds in Colombia last March, but the extra 5kg of power was not enough to close the gap he allowed Webster to build."

Wales' Francesca Jones won silver in the individual all-around competition to secure her second medal of the Games. She's understandably emotional: "It means everything. The sole focus for two years has been this. It's been such a long road. To get the results we've done I cant even put it into words."

Compatriot Laura Halford, who won bronze, adds: "Frankie has inspired me. When I saw her get her medal in Delhi I knew I wanted to do the same. Having her as a role model and supporting me was amazing. On the podium I was thinking I couldn't believe I'd won a bronze medal. I didn't think an individual medal would be realistic. EIGHT - Brown Ramohaka, Solomon Islands

    Brown Ramohaka

Weightlifter Brown Ramohaka made it to the Commonwealth Games despite struggling for training time in cramped facilities back home.

"I started weightlifting because I was walking past the gym one day and stood by the window," he recalls following his 62kg contest. "I looked inside the gym and the man who is now my coach asked me: 'Do you want to come and train with us?'"

Brown has been lifting ever since but his coach, Lesley, says he succeeded against the odds in Glasgow: "I'm very proud of him. He beat his personal best, when back at home we have only two weightlifting platforms for training - one for ladies and one for males. Training was difficult and I'm happy that when he came here, he did his best."

  128. Track Cycling

    Men's sprint

    Victoria Pendleton

Double Olympic champion and BBC Sport cycling expert

"It was a fabulous race and Jason seemed to hold back and give it to Sam Webster. Maybe Jason's used up too much energy and he perhaps should have picked up the pace a bit sooner.

"I think Webster deserves credit for keeping it slow and playing to his strengths, because a longer race would have suited Jason."

  129. Gold Medal

Sam Webster (New Zealand) - men's sprint cycling

    Webster leads Kenny

There is no gold medal for England's Jason Kenny. New Zealand's Sam Webster, who won the opening race, takes the third to take the glory and the victory.

Seven - Vannara Be and Socheata Be, Australia

    Vannara Be

Weightlifting siblings Vannara Be (pictured) and Socheata Be were born in Cambodia but moved to Australia to follow their father, who left his home country after suffering years of oppression - and the deaths of relatives - inflicted by infamous dictator Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.

"Vannara finished second in Group B of the men's 62kg class, watched by his sister. "Back in my dad's day it was tragic," said the 26-year-old. "His brother came over to Australia through Thailand as a refugee, then brought my dad over. That's where it all started for us.

"There's great support for Jason Kenny here and he's produced the goods. You have to take your opportunity, he's a very instinctive rider, and he did that. If you move up and down the banking it makes it more difficult for the guy who is following you. Jason has nerves of steel."

  172. Track cycling

    Women's 3,000m individual pursuit

    Katie Archibald

Scotland's Katie Archibald is next up at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome as she competes in the bronze-medal race in the 3,000m individual pursuit. The 20-year-old's opponent is Australia's Amy Cure, 21.

Archibald was part of the Scotland group who won the team pursuit gold at the 2014 World Championships in Colombia.

  173. Track cycling

Peter Lewis sneaks off the line first, peering around his shoulder at his red and white rival. Jason Kenny feints to go on the inside, swoops around the outside and then hammers the pedals hard. 174. Netball

Scotland v St Lucia (17:00 BST)

Scotland will be playing their first ever Commonwealth Games netball match today when they face the Caribbean island of St Lucia at 17:00 BST.

St Lucia suffered a 88-24 defeat against Jamaica on Thursday. Northern Ireland are the next opponents for the Jamaicans, and that match starts at 19:00 BST.

  177. Track Cycling

    Neil Fachie celebrates

The atmosphere in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome is crackling more than a fatty piece of pork belly on a hot barbeque. The big man Hoy, sat trackside as a BBC TV pundit, has an envious twinkle in his eye as he watches on.

We have another rendition of The Proclaimers' 1980s classic (I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles, before that is cut off for a lone bagpiper to welcome Scottish gold medallists Neil Fachie and Craig McLean. Huge roar as the pair climb on to the top step of the podium.

  178. Gold Medal

Laura Coles (Australia) - women's skeet

Australia's Laura Coles beats Elena Allen of Wales to win the women's skeet gold, scoring 14-16 to Allen's 13-16. It is Wales' third medal of the Games.

  179. Track Cycling

    Victoria Pendleton

Double Olympic champion and BBC Sport cycling expert

"That was perfect from Jason Kenny. The size of the gap you leave to allow yourself to accelerate is crucial and Jason Kenny nailed it. That is exactly how you do it in training. If you are too close in behind you can't get the space to overtake, but that was textbook."

  180. Track Cycling

    Rob Hayles

Three-time Olympic medallist and BBC Sport cycling expert

"Jason Kenny just lay off the back of Peter Lewis and allowed him to take the pressure. The way he timed his final run was so good, he rode it absolutely perfectly. He used the centrifugal force out of the banking to slingshot himself up the home straight. He really hit him."

  181. Track Cycling

That is what you call timing the sprint to perfection! England's Jason Kenny stalks Peter Lewis from distance until the final straight, then flies out of the bend to hunt down his prey, hitting the whitewash just ahead of his Australian opponent. That takes the Olympic champion into a deciding race for a place in the men's sprint final.

  182. Shooting

    Women's skeet

Andri Eleftheriou of Cyprus beats England's Sarah Gray to win the bronze in the women's skeet.

Next up is Wales' Elena Allen goes for gold in the gold-medal match.

And there is even more to like for Wales supporters with team silver medallists Francesca Jones and Laura Halford in second and third spot of the rhythmic all-around final at the SSE Hydro Arena. The ribbon is the final event. Stay tuned."

  184. Track Cycling

    Sarah Storey

Six-time Paralympic cycling gold medallist and BBC Sport expert

"It was a superb start from Scotland's Neil Fachie and Craig MacLean, the tandem was reaching 70kmph at the mid-part of the race. That final half-lap it looked like they were pedalling through treacle, but it is brilliant to see they are the champions.

"Paul Kennedy and Thomas Clarke will be disappointed with their time, just outside of the 1:05 mark. They are always living in the shadow of the other Australian pair Keiran Modra and Jason Niblett.

"That was an incredible time from them to win silver, while the Welsh have bronze."

  185. Track Cycling

    Victoria Pendleton

Double Olympic champion and BBC Sport cycling expert

"Neil Fachie and Craig MacLean have worked together a long time and that I don't think that was ever in doubt! To make up so much time shows their class."

  186. Gold Medal

    Neil Fachie/Craig MacLean (track cycling) - men's para-sport 1000m time trial B2 tandem

Neil Fachie (L) and pilot Craig Maclean celebrate

The roof has just been lifted off the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome - Scotland win another gold!

Paralympic champion Neil Fachie was the hot favourite to triumph alongside Craig MacLean, and pair meet that huge expectation with ease.

A storming display in the Para-sport 1000m time trial, where they clocked one minute 2.096 seconds, condemns Australia's Kieran Modra and Jason Niblett (1:02.244) to silver. Bronze going to Wales's Matt Ellis and Ieuan Williams (1:04.095).

  187. Shooting

Wales' Elena Allen shoots - and she scores a place in the women's skeet final. The 42-year-old former world record holder beats England's Sarah Gray in the sudden-death shoot-off to reach the gold medal match.

Watch the final via our live video stream.

  188. Gymnastics

Canada's Patricia Bezzoubenko retains her lead after the third rotation in the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around final.

Bezzoubenko scored 15.000 on the clubs for a total of 44.375 with Wales's Frankie Jones second on 43.150 and her team-mate Laura Halford, the British champion in third on 42.975.

One round to go - the ribbon.

  189. Shooting

More shoot-off drama in Carnoustie, which isn't surprising considering the last three Open winners in the famous golf town were all victorious through play-offs.

But this lot are handy with pistols, not putters. Elena Allen of Wales and England's Sarah Gray face a shoot-off for a place in the gold medal match in the women's skeet after both scoring 13 from 16 in the semi-final. The winner will meet Australia's Laura Coles.

  190. Track cycling

Northern Ireland's James Brown (the godfather of para-cycling perhaps?) is feeling good after powering his way around the track in a time of 1:09.413.

But that's not enough to budge Wales' Matthew Ellis from that top spot.

  191. Track Cycling

    Rob Hayles

Three-time Olympic medallist and BBC Sport cycling expert

"New Zealand really have improved in the last few seasons and have come here absolutely on fire. That first race was very evenly matched but Ed Dawkins just wasn't able to use the banking to his advantage on the final turn and Sam Webster held on in the home straight."

  192. Track Cycling

    Sir Chris Hoy

Six-time Olympic champion and BBC Sport cycling expert

"Jason Kenny rode it well, when you are leading from the front you want to keep your opponent close. Peter Lewis had the momentum and he lunged well on the line. There is nothing in it.

"I could be wrong but I think it will go to a third. If Kenny can come from the back and use his momentum in the same way Lewis did it will go to a grandstand finish.

"Kenny has that title, he is Olympic champion. He has a good temperament and experience, its a big challenge but he can still do this."

  193. Track cycling

Welsh pair Matthew Ellis and Ieuan Williams set a cracking pace in the men's para tandem 100m time trial, with a time of 1:04.095. The gauntlet has been well and truly laid down to the rest of the field.

  194. Track cycling

In the other men's sprint semi-final, New Zealand's Sam Webster digs deep to nick the opener from fellow Kiwi Edward Dawkins.

So it's advantage Sam Webster and advantage Peter Lewis. The second instalment of this three-part thriller will be on your screens in about 20 minutes.

  195. Badminton

    Nick Hope

    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"Elizabeth Cann won two bronze medals for England at the Delhi Commonwealth Games four years ago, but is competing for Jersey here in Glasgow.

"The 35-year-old had previously represented Jersey in 1998, 2002 and 2006 but after retiring from the English setup last year wanted one last shot at ending Jersey's hunt for a Commonwealth medal, which goes all the way back to 1990.

"It's not looking great for her prospects though as she loses to England's Sarah Walker 21-15, 21-13 in the mixed-team event, meaning England win the tie with an unassailable 3-0 lead."

  196. Track Cycling

    Victoria Pendleton

Double Olympic champion and BBC Sport cycling expert

"It was a very late attack there from Peter Lewis in the first race, and it was well timed. He's just nicked it ahead of Jason Kenny on a photo finish."

  197. Track Cycling

Another Para-cycling gold is up for grabs at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome from 16:10 BST in the men's tandem 1000m time trial for blind and visually impaired athletes.

The favourite will be Scotland's Neil Fachie who will be partnered by Craig Maclean, a former team-mate of the man who the venue is named after and one of only a couple of athletes to have won both Olympic and Paralympic medals.

Fachie is a former sprinter who switched to the bike in 2009 and won Paralympic gold in the event with Barney Storey in London and World gold earlier this year with England's Pete Mitchell.

  198. Track cycling

    Peter Lewis and Jason Kenny

Jason Kenny leads all the way in the first race of his semi-final - until the last five metres. Australian rival Peter Lewis bites back hard down the final straight to hit the white line about a quarter of a tyre ahead. The Englishman must win both of the next two races to earn a place in the final.

  199. Track Cycling

    Sir Chris Hoy

Six-time Olympic champion and BBC Sport cycling expert

"Jason Kenny is starting to build up his confidence and people will start to fear him now ahead of this sprint semi-finals. Even though he didn't qualify particularly quickly yesterday, he is an experienced racer and will be a tough prospect for anyone in the last four.

"The Aussies are still very good racers. I thought Sam Webster was probably the overall favourite beforehand but Edward Dawkins has looked capable of going quick. There's not much to choose between them all."

Halford scored 14.500 and is ahead of team-mate Frankie Jones, Pantelitsa Theodoulou of Cyprus and Wong Poh San of Malaysia who are all on 14.250.

The next rotation for the 16 athletes is the ball.

  221. Squash

Nick Matthew does not need a party hat and bag full of presents to have a good time on his birthday. The English number one, who will have 34 candles in his cake today, is two games ahead in the best-of-five last-16 tie against Scotland's Alan Clyne.

Clyne is also celebrating his birthday today, but he needs a minor miracle to avoid defeat and make his 28th one to remember for the right reasons.

  222. Gold Medal

Shun Xie Teo (Singapore) - 10m Air Pistol

Wales were hoping 20-year-old Coral Kennerley would boost their medal hopes with a top-three finish in the women's 10m air pistol. Unfortunately she could only finish sixth as Singapore's Shun Xie Teo claimed gold.

Still a great effort from Kennerley, who does most of her training at home. She stands with one foot in the shower, shooting through the bathroom and bedroom onto the landing so she can replicate the 10m distance required. True story folks.

Beaten by some very classy riders though and I will spending the rest of the day cheering for Joanna Rowsell and Katie Archibald in their gold and bronze finals!"

Team pursuit World champion Barker failed to qualify for the women's 3000m individual pursuit final earlier today.

  226. Shooting

Drama o'clock in the skeet! Three women are gunning for a place in the semi-final through the qualification play-off and six clays in, Cyprus' Panagiota Andreou misses her fifth attempt and bites the dust.

That leaves English pair Amber Hill and Sarah Gray in a saloon style stand-off. Teenager Hill misses her ninth attempt and that allows Gray to book her spot in the semi-final which starts at 16:00 BST today.

A packed Scotscoun Sports Complex finds its voice to sing 'Happy Birthday' to England's Nick Matthew and Scotland's Alan Clyne, who are both - remarkably - celebrating their special days today.

The 16-year-old England shooter, who won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award last year, faces team-mate Sarah Gray and Panagiota Andreou of Cyprus for the final place in the six-woman semi-final of the skeet.

Hill appeared to be cruising in round one, nailing her first 20 clays, but missed two of her final five and then dropped another three in the second round. A disappointing third-round 20 out of 25 sticks her into sudden-death.

England's Fran Halsall set a new Commonwealth Games record earlier of 24.31 seconds in the 50m freestyle.

"I did that and felt quite good so it is quite a confident boost that I am in good form."

  236. Track Cycling

Defending champion and world-record holder Jack Bobridge does not look to have suffered too much in helping Australia win team pursuit gold on day one.

He returns to the Chris Hoy Velodrome 24 hours later to lay down the fastest time while beating England's Andy Tennant in individual pursuit qualifying, and looks well set to feature in this evening's final. With two more heats to come, Tennant lies third and in line for a bronze medal ride.

    Men's bantamweight

Michael Conlan must be wishing he was wearing head-guard. This is the first Commonwealth Games where the boxers, like their professional counterparts, dance around the ring without any head protection. Why? Because governing body AIBA reckon research suggests that it decreases the chance of suffering concussion.

  241. Boxing

But 22-year-old Conlan, the man to beat in the bantamweight, clears up the claret and re-emerges from his corner to keep Nauru's Mathew Martin at bay in the final round.

Martin puts on a brave face as he trudges over to the referee, but he knows Conlan has won at a canter. That's right, Conlan's arm is raised into the air. Comfortable win for the Northern Irishman - apart from the discomfort above his eye.

  242. Boxing

Boxing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

Men will compete in 10 weight classes, with bouts contested over three rounds of three minutes each. There are three events for women, who box over four two-minute rounds.

Points are scored for landing the knuckles of a punch on an opponent's head or upper body. Rounds are scored out of 10, with the winner always getting 10. Each bout is decided in the first place by rounds won, rather than points.

"I can only assume she misread the timetable and has arrived for what she thinks are the diving lessons. She must be a tad shocked that snorkelling is such a well-watched spectator sport in Glasgow."

Karen Li puts New Zealand 2-0 ahead against Mauritius with a 3-0 victory against Isabelle Chowree, 11-3 11-1 11-7. The doubles follows in the best-of-five contest. Is that where the Kiwis put this tie to bed? Find out by taking a seat in the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

  294. Netball

    Clyde

The netballers are taking a quick break in the SECC, but the fun continues. Clyde,Glasgow 2014's official mascot, busts some shapes in the middle of the court to keep everyone entertained. If disco dancing was a Commonwealth sport, Clyde would be a sure-fire gold medallist on that evidence.

  295. Netball

Two of the heavyweights are slugging it out in Glasgow SEEC. Of course, it's New Zealand v Malawi. The New Zealand Ferns, bidding for a straight third title, are ranked second in the world, with the fifth-ranked Malawi Queens in close pursuit.

And there is little to separate them in the vast arena on the banks of the Clyde. The Ferns edged the first period 14-13, before the Queens hit back to level 25-25 at the halfway stage. Catch the final two quarters (or second half if you prefer) here.

  296. Netball

    Netball

Netball still may have a schoolgirl image for some - but it shouldn't. It's fast, furious and very competitive. The 12 teams compete in two pools of six and the top two teams from each group progress to the semi-finals. Teams consist of seven players and matches are played over four 15-minute periods, with the prospect of extra-time if teams are level in a medal or classification match.

"Age is no barrier. It's a limitation you put on your mind."

The words of legendary American hepthathlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee could quite easily have come out of Li Chunli's mouth. Remarkably, the New Zealander decided to retire shortly after her golden 2002 Games, coaching at the 2006 and 2010 events, before deciding she could mix it with these young whipper-snappers in Glasgow.

"At this age, you can still do many things including competing. be happy. Enjoy life," she says. Hear hear!

  298. Table tennis

Fifty-two-year-old Li Chunli, winner of the singles' gold and three other medals at the Manchester Games in 2002, gives New Zealand a winning start against Mauritius in the women's team group stage. The Kiwi earns a 3-0 victory (11-2 11-7 11-3) over Widaad Gukhoo.

One decent story you might have missed from late on day one - England's Sir Bradley Wiggins says he will not ride the Tour de France again.

The 34-year-old, who won a silver medal in the team pursuit, claimed that road racing is "cut-throat" with "no kind of loyalties".

"I've kind of done the road now. I've bled it dry," he told BBC Sport. "The track feels more like a family and a closer-knit group of people."

Millar, a late call-up as replacement for the injured -100kg judoka James Austin, defeated Mathews Bpunza of Zambia to win bronze on Thursday.

The National Hockey Centre is drenched in early morning sunshine as 2010 sliver medallists India, decked out in bright yellow, take on Wales, making their first appearance in the men's tournament at the Commonwealth Games for 12 years.

After making the early running, India move ahead through Okkaliga Ramachandra Raghunath before Wales hit back midway through the first half with a brilliant finish from Andrew Kornick.

"Wales are not allowing India any room around the 'D' and they're dangerous on the counter-attack," says former GB Olympic champion Sean Kerly.

  304. Judo

"One of the things about judo is that there are so many breaks and we have to keep focused - it requires a lot of mental skill," adds England's Colin Oates.

"We had a wonderful reception from the crowd. We weren't sure what reaction we would get from the Scottish crowd but they have been supporting us as well - except when we were fighting the Scottish boys."

England's Colin Oates says he is still pinching himself after waking up this morning with a gold medal on his bedside table.

The 31-year-old Londoner beat Andreas Krassas of Cyprus in the men's -66kg on Thursday

"When you come away with a gold medal you can't believe it but we came here with a job and were probably favourites, so we had to deliver," he tells BBC Breakfast.

Kimberley and Louise Renicks, who both won gold in Judo on Thursday, are natives of the Scottish town of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

  308. Shooting

Skeet sounds like the latest subculture to be embraced by teenagers across the conurbations of Britain. In fact, it is one of the disciplines in clay target shooting.

    • Shooters fire at a series of single targets and simultaneous 'doubles' thrown at fixed angles from separate towers about 40m apart. Targets are thrown from the two towers in order to cross in the middle of the shooting field.
    • Competitors are only permitted one shot per target, and the gun must be held at elbow level until the target appears. Each competitor takes turns at the eight shooting stations (positions).
    • Men fire at 125 targets in five rounds of 25 over two days: 75 targets one day, and 50 the other. Women fire at 75 targets in three rounds of 25 over the course of a day.
  309. Shooting

Think of the sport of shooting and you think of middle-aged, male, flat-cap-wearing aristocrats strolling around their vast swathes of their country manor picking off rabbits. Wrong. Amber Hill is not your typical shooter.

"My nails are bright, I have a sprayed gun and pink cartridges," she tells BBC Berkshire.

"I am still really girly, but sport is a big part of my life. I don't see why I can't have a mix of both, even though it is a male-dominated sport."

  310. Shooting

Carnoustie is a place synonymous with golf, with the small Scottish town famed for hosting the Open Championship on several occasions.

But over the next 10 days, the North Sea coastal town is swapping putters for pistols as it hosts the Commonwealth shooting. Three events are under way with 16-year-old Amber Hill of England just pulling the trigger on her quest for gold in the women's skeet.

  311. Swimming

Scotland swimmer Ross Murdoch's eye-catching victory in the 200m breaststroke surprised many - but not former Olympic champion David Wilkie.

"I had a feeling Ross was going to do something pretty special," fellow Scot Wilkie tells BBC Radio 5live. "He looked very, very good in the heats, he looked confident, he swam well, his stroke was perfect."

It's curling on grass, and everybody loved curling at the 2014 Winter Olympics, didn't they?

The objective is simple: roll your bowl closer to the jack (a smaller ball) than your opponent and you score a point. In singles, the winner is the first player to reach 21 points. In pairs, triples and fours, a set number of ends are played and the total score decides the winner.

The majority of the medals will be won later in the day, but there will be plenty of fierce competition in Glasgow this morning.

Swimming: The pool will see Thursday's star men Ross Murdoch and Michael Jamieson resume their rivalry in the 100m breaststroke heats at 11:16 BST, while Robbie Renwick begins his 200m freestyle title defence at 10:44.

Track cycling: England will hope to improve on Thursday's two silvers with Jason Kenny going in the individual sprint quarter-final at 11:01, before Joanna Rowsell, Dani King and Laura Trott compete in the individual pursuit from 11:19.

All the home nations are represented as judo resumes at the SECC from 10:00, Wales' men open their hockey campaign against India at 09:00, while the shooting and lawn bowls get under way in a matter of minutes...

    Kimberly Renicks

Kimberly Renicks, who had the honour of winning Scotland's first gold, says the vociferous home support helped her to victory.

"The crowd was absolutely brilliant. They were behind you so much. When they announced your name they just erupted and it really did give you that extra boost," she tells BBC Breakfast.

"The first two girls I fought I had never fought before and I didn't know their style, so the first 30 seconds I was just seeing what they would do."

  319. Medal table

    Glasgow 2014

However, that quadruple was still not enough for Scotland to fly to the top of the medal table. Instead it is the 'Auld Enemy'. England are setting the early pace after the likes of triathletes Jodie Stimpson and Alistair Brownlee won gold.

  320. Post update

But, even before the Scottish swimmers made a splash, the host nation had already bagged two 100g circles of gold. And they were snaffled by the same family.

Sisters Kimberley and Louise Renicks won Scotland's first gold medals of the Games with thrilling judo victories before a raucous home crowd.

Kimberley, 26, beat India's Sushila Likmabam in the -48kg weight category before Louise, 31, overcame England's Kelly Edwards in a nervy -52kg final.

Mr and Mrs Renicks will be beaming from ear-to-ear today.

  321. Post update

Before we dive head first into that lot, let's recap on what you might have missed.

    Glasgow 2014

Host nation Scotland enjoyed a wonderful first day, claiming four golds in the space of three hours.

Swimmer Ross Murdoch, 20, upset home favourite Michael Jamieson to win a thrilling 200m breaststroke final. That came after Hannah Miley broke her own Commonwealth Games record in the pool to win the 400m medley.
