An anti-gun campaigner has been charged with possession of an imitation firearm after police pulled what looked like a weapon from the River Mersey.

Stephen French, 53, of no fixed abode, was arrested after armed officers responded to an argument on Water Street on Wednesday.

Two other men who were arrested have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Mr French has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court later.

He is also charged with intent to cause fear of violence and possession of a bladed article.
