Wigan have signed Chelsea striker Franco Di Santo for an undisclosed fee and taken Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley on a season-long loan.

Di Santo, 21, who spent 15 games on loan at Blackburn last season, has agreed a three-year deal with Wigan.

Lactics' boss Martinez said: "Di Santo can fulfil his potential, he'll bring a different dimension to our squad."

Cleverley, 21, spent last season on loan at at Watford where he scored 11 goals in 33 games.

Martinez said: "Tom is a very exciting young player and we are delighted he is coming to us.

"He can play in a number of positions and will provide us with some good new options, and add great competition."

England Under-21 international Cleverley's loan spell at Watford was ended last season when he suffered knee ligament damage against West Bromwich Albion in April.

He had looked set to stay at Old Trafford this season after impressing in Manchester United's pre-season games with performances which led United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to compare him to Paul Scholes.

But Cleverley will now be handed the chance to gain Premier League experience with Wigan.

Martinez added: "We have been watching him for some time and feel he is the right sort of player to join our squad; young, hungry, desperate to play for the club in the Premier League and to grow with us."
