A ghostly cheetah appears against a charred landscape, hunting prey that has nowhere left to hide. This shot, taken after a bushfire in Tanzania, won Britta Jaschinski the overall GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2010 prize.

Gönye Csaba's photograph of a snail in springtime was another category winner. Snails hibernate during cold weather, emerging in the spring.
This stunning capture of a kingfisher hunting underwater earned Manfred Delpho a commendation. Kingfishers are skilled hunters and will beat their prey to death on a branch after plucking it from the water.
Spot the birdy in Paul Hobson's category-winning image. Many animals have been observed taking advantage of man-made structures to reclaim urban habitats.
