New Charlton boss Chris Powell marked his managerial debut with a victory against Plymouth.
The visitors nearly took the lead when a Kari Arnason volley flew agonisingly over the bar.
Scott Wagstaff put the home side ahead when he pounced on a poor Marcel Seip backpass and placed a shot past Argyle keeper David Button.
On-loan Nathan Eccleston made the points secure late on when he broke clear of the defence and slotted in.
Charlton manager Chris Powell told BBC London 94.9: "It was a fantastic finish for young Nathan who has come from Liverpool.
"It was a relief for everyone, all the Charlton fans that were listening and that were watching and of course relief for myself too.
"It has been a surreal week and it felt a bit surreal walking out there today, but I know it's for real and three points is a great start."
Plymouth Argyle manager Peter Reid told BBC Radio Devon: "Before they scored I thought we were the better side, I thought we got control of the game and if there was one team going to score I thought it'd be us.
"All in all I've got to say I thought my players did terrifically well today and I didn't think they got out of the game what they deserved.
"The way they went about the job pleases me and that's all I can ask, if they give me 100% I can't ask for anything more and I thought they did today."
