MITCHELL...! Is this really it? After three series, countless hours, the ecstatic highs and devastating lows, it was George who finally did the deed and ended Mitchell's long life with the words "I'm doing this because I love you".

So it's with a heavy heart we say John Mitchell... RIP.

We've gone behind the scenes of the final act of the series to see exactly how Mitchell's powerful and emotional final scene was made and to say goodbye to the fantastic Aidan Turner.

Damn, it's not easy to say those words. Alas, there are times in life when words just can't do justice to feelings. On those times we turn to Toby Whithouse, the creator of Being Human, to explain the full story...

From the first moment we met Aidan, we knew we were really only borrowing him from global super stardom. The same goes for all our cast. You can't have actors as good as Aidan  and Russell and Lenora and Sinead and Jason, and not expect someone  else to notice.

I guess it really hit me back when we were doing series 2, and perhaps unconsciously I shifted the stories in a way that paved Mitchell's exit. I thought it'd be better to have him go out in a scripted satisfying way, rather than lose him between series and open up with the rest of our heroes standing over a grave, with one of them saying "Wow, who'd have guessed Mitchell was SO allergic to bee stings..."

The consequences of the Box Tunnel Massacre were always going to be the cause of his demise, but whether that happened at the end of series 3 or series 33 was never defined. Contrary to a lot of the posts on the blog assuming that we'd chosen to kill him off, I didn't want to write him out until I had to. And certainly right up until the shooting script of episode 8, Mitchell was still going to be undead and kicking when the credits rolled.

But then Peter Jackson came along. And it turns out he's a fan of the show. Oh Irony, I could punch you in the neck.

Once we'd all stopped congratulating Aidan and envying him we had to decide what to do with our favourite vampire. Despite his commitments to Middle Earth, we were still planning to keep Mitchell 'alive'. Perhaps, we thought, Wyndham could dispatch him back to Bolivia and maybe (though we had to concede it was pretty unlikely given what Aidan's schedule would be for the next 3 years) we could get Mitchell back for an episode of series 7...?

But y'see, that Turner fella is smart. He knew that ending, while leaving the door open for him to return one day, would be ultimately unsatisfying. And so it was his decision - and with his encouragement - that we ended Mitchell's story there.

It was like one of your children leaving home. You're excited for them and wish them all the best... even though you really want them to stay with you forever. But like I said, with actors of that quality, it's inevitable that they're going to be offered other extraordinary opportunities.

Nonetheless, we shouldn't let the end of Mitchell's story define all that's gone before. For me it's been an honour to work with Aidan over the last 3 years. Watching him mature as an actor has been one of the great pleasures of working on this show. And aside from his skill and professionalism and talent, he's also a ridiculously nice and funny guy, and...

Actually, damn him. Seriously. I'm glad he's dead.

So let's raise a glass to Aidan Turner. It's been a blast. You appallingly talented man.

There's more to come from the world of Being Human... Come back to the blog tomorrow for a very special announcement. Plus, there's brand new Becoming Human that's just been released, plus you can recap the whole series and discover the killer in a 50min TV special next Sunday at 9pm on BBC Three.

But tonight belongs to John Mitchell and the phenomenal Aidan Turner. Leave your tributes and share your feelings in the comments below...

    No.

  • Comment number 4.

Here's to you, kid! Just like a star across my sky! Just like a angel off the page. You have appeared to my life, feels like I'll never be the same. See you at the movies, indeed!

  • Comment number 5.

I can understand but I don't want to

  • Comment number 6.

Congratulations Messrs Whithouse, Turner and Tovey. You've just made a grown man cry!

  • Comment number 7.

I'll just re-post from previous entry, I hope it is allowed:

I knew this was a possibility, and I'm really sorry TW, I'm always in awe of what you've done with the show, but this ending was poor. Mitchell's story arc wasn't properly closed, it was chopped with an axe. Very, very disappointed.

  • Comment number 8.

ok who else is dissapointed by this ending ?

  • Comment number 9.

    gutted.

    but the end?

  • Comment number 10.

RIP Mitchell :( Please come back...

  • Comment number 11.

rip lovely mitchell. it was the right decision anything less would have felt like a cop out. To the very lovely aidan turner..good luck we will keep watching and supporting you

  • Comment number 12.

I was unexpectedly dragged into the world of vampires and werewolves, and now my life seems strangely empty. Goodbye John Mitchell I will miss you!

  • Comment number 13.

    I can't believe it.
We all had a feeling it would happen, but I don't think we want to believe what just happened.
Good luck with everything Aidan, but oh how we all wish Peter Jackson hadn't spotted you.

  • Comment number 14.

I can't believe this. I'm angry, sad and happy for him at the same time...Aidan, Being Human will never be the same without you. I wish you all the best.

  • Comment number 15.

Waaaaaaaahhhhh!!!! Good luck, Aidan, you deserve to go on to great things.

  • Comment number 16.

Wow, bye John Mitchell. What a fantastic actor you are Aiden! See you in The Hobbit soon !

  • Comment number 17.

Amazing - Acting, Writing and Direction! This was an epic episode, had me in tears by the end!!!

  • Comment number 18.

I'm seriously devastated. I don't know what else to say.

  • Comment number 19.

"rather than lose him between series and open up with the rest of our heroes standing over a grave, with one of them saying "Wow, who'd have guessed Mitchell was SO allergic to bee stings..." "

Curse you for making me laugh, Mr Whithouse, curse you.

I may be in a minority but I loved it. Every second and every decision. I couldn't see Mitchell coming back from what had happened. He could redeem himself but things would never be the same. Our OTP/OT3/OT4 would never be the same and if Aidan wanted this, I'm glad. Better a brilliant final episode than a half-arsed door left open that's never actually walked through again because of new commitments.

Good luck to you Aidan, I'll watch your future with loyalty, as I will Sinead, Russell and Lenora.

If there's a season 4, count me in, if there isn't, I'll still be thankful for the brilliant show that was Being Human.

Thank you Toby and everyone for this brilliance, this beautiful, utterly beautiful brilliance.

  • Comment number 20.

y did they do it. he was the only reason i was watching the the action im gonna miss him! :(

  • Comment number 21.

I couldn't stop crying at the end, then that old vampire, then more crying!

  • Comment number 22.

    what the ?????????????????????????????/

why did we waste so much time on earlier episodes just to rush tonight's story this could've been done over two episodes

Mitchell deserved better and I'm sorry why did Nina get a speaking part at the end it should've been about George, Annie and Mitchell! The original three

  • Comment number 23.

I do appreciate an ending, even if it is tragically not what I want to see. If you all could share how you felt about how the relationships were left at his death, I would so love it as I won't be able to see it until it comes up in the US.

  • Comment number 24.

OMG!!!! Really crying here. so upset that Mitchell is gone. I will definitely miss him so cute and so good. but hope that there will be a twist and he comes back. Being Human is not the same without him. farewell Mitchell and hope to see Aidan in the movies soon. Love you!!!

  • Comment number 25.

OMGosh- so he really is gone...wow.

  • Comment number 26.

There will be a series 4. The BBC wouldn't be so daft as to leave it there. It has to be one of the most popular series they have.

Mitchell will be back. I'm sure I read somewhere that Aiden Turner would film S4 on breaks from The Hobbit?

We need to see the baby, I'm sure Tom will be back as well.

And Gilbert was mentioned! Not seen but definately appreciated!

  • Comment number 27.

    11 - I agree

BH prod, you took on an amazing journey and now we really understand what "being human" means: sometimes IT HURTS, badly

  • Comment number 28.

bye bye :( what a truly young stunning actor, all the best in the future and when i see you in the movies !! sad to see mitchell go, brilliant part of the show!

  • Comment number 29.

In shock...please let there be another series....rip mitchell...well played aidan my friends in the america are watching on project tv...we all love ya and hope to see you again...wonderful acting!!! aplause aplause aplause standing ovation

  • Comment number 30.

OH my gosh that was gut wrenching..Good bye and R.I.P John Mitchell. He will be sorely missed. The show's gonna be so different without him in the mix!

  • Comment number 31.

WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED YOU KILLED OFF MITCHELL IM SO VERY UPSET HOW CAN YOU HAVE BEING HUMAN WITHOUT MITCHELL WHAT ABOUT ANNIE?

  • Comment number 32.

Gosh, taht was a tense ending. I salute you, Mitchell. And George, for having the guts to kill him.

  • Comment number 33.

Omg!!! Hes gone!! Hes not coming back??? cryed my eyes out at the end, roll on the next series tho! Mitchell you were fantastic :)

  • Comment number 34.

Not enough words and too many tears tonight. Maybe tomorrow I'll know how I really feel. Bye Mitchell, you made the Being Human family what it is. Who knows what's coming next, you really never can tell with you guys!

  • Comment number 35.

So goodbye Mitchell. Got by a Hobbit Shaped Bullet.
Congrats to Mr Turner for having the courage to say goodbye, and of course we will be praising you to the heavens for years to come.
    Thank you.

  • Comment number 36.

the best thing about tonight's episode???

The anticipation before 9pm from all the bloggers!!!!! I am so NOT watching a show about 2 WW and ghost

  • Comment number 37.

NO MITCHELL!! WHY :( AND WILL THEY CONTINUE THE SHOW?

  • Comment number 38.

    Well that sucked.

  • Comment number 39.

i feel empty...so is that it no more BH? :(

  • Comment number 40.

Just awful - I'm in bits. Aidan you've been fantastic and now a grown woman is crying her heart out.

  • Comment number 41.

Thank You Aidan Turner, for giving us an unforgettable performance of an extraordinary character. John Mitchell will never be forgotten.

As much as we loved him (and we LOVED him), i think it had to end the way it did, if only to grant poor Mitchell some peace finally!

  • Comment number 42.

i cried my eyes out when he died :'( i still cant beleive it -
but i agree with you all ^^ x

  • Comment number 43.

I am glad to have an explanation for the loss of such a fantastic character (well two actually Herrick was the bestest badest baddy and fabulously acted).

Fair play to Aidan and I really hope his career is full of all the good things and none of the bad. I am looking forward to seeing him on the big screen and being able to say "I watched him when..." Just like I do with Johnny Depp actually!

BH team your mission should you choose to accept it is to find a suitable and equally tasty character for us. And then please Aidan keep Jackson so enthralled he doesn't have time to watch!!

BH will never be the same :(

  • Comment number 44.

    I. feel. so. sad. I can't say anything.

Except that I am going to be an Aidan Turner fan for life.

  • Comment number 45.

This was so beautiful and sad. Brilliant job to everyone involved. I'll be crying for a long time...

  • Comment number 46.

OK, just read TW's bit at the top. No more AT. But has to be a series 4.

  • Comment number 47.

Jesus :( Amazing episode, I was so tense throughtout that I never knew what would happen.

I am a bit miffed frankly that they had to let Aidan go for some bit part in the Hobbit where he's not even gonna look like himself but it made sense story-wise so I guess I can't complain. :/

My only issue is how the show will work without him.

Again phenomenal episode, and we have a villain to rival Herrick if it does return.

  • Comment number 48.

What a disgrace of a ending

  • Comment number 49.

    I cnt belive it,,

  • Comment number 50.

'You were the love of my long life.'
'And you were the love of mine.'

Sorry to be borderline spam-emotional but i actually cannot crying- it feels like the last three years of my life have just DISAPPEARED, you know? his journey has just been so long and so wonderful that i just cannot deal with this right now!!

.....is it wrong i just kind of don't want another series without him as well? and it's a vvv selfish fangirly thought but on another level i am just devastated by the loss of annie/mitchell to the show. ive wanted it for three years. this is REALLY it.

i respect that there really was nowhere else for mitchell's character to go but damn i really really wish he hadnt of had to leave. my heart is genuinely in pieces right now.

back to english coursework now, sorry to spam you with my gibberish, of course you dont have to agree with any of it, i just needed to let it out!!

  • Comment number 51.

I am very happy for Aidan. I am so sad about the way this ended as I love the character, but he really is a gifted talent (and wow - I mean, look at the guy...) and he deserves to grow and be happy.
I look forward to his new endeavors...
Good Luck and Much Love Aidan!

  • Comment number 52.

Gutted episode good but majorly overshadowed by final scene
RIP John Mitchell~ My Vampire no one will ever come close you were the love of my life too.

Good Luck to Aiden Turner whatever comes your way you will excel because you will always have your BH fans behind you Thank you xXx

    Good Night All xxx

  • Comment number 53.

Great ending - I bawled like a baby!! And now YET ANOTHER reason I can't wait for The Hobbit...

Here's hoping Tom gets more of a role in Series 4 tho yes?? ;)

Bye Aidan - we will miss you xxx

  • Comment number 54.

    I can't even.............

  • Comment number 55.

Also anyone up for some EPIC re-watching of season 1 ?!

  • Comment number 56.

I'm crying so much I feel like I might throw up. Fantastic scene, crying like a baby since it happened :'( Damn you Aidan, for being so talented. I love you to bits, but I wish you hadn't left. Please come back. Please. Even if it's just a flashback in a future series, please come back to us.

  • Comment number 57.

    Not George.

I never thought that TW could be this cruel.

  • Comment number 58.

Wow, that was hard to watch. But it was the only thing that could happen. Mitchell has been so lost for so long. Really the last time he seemed genuinely at peace with himself was the episode in s2 where they were out on the street with all the neighbours due to the phantom gas leak. So Mitchell saved Lauren and George saved Mitchell. But how we'll miss him...

  • Comment number 59.

Oh my beating heart, I'm just.....

What a fantastic series this has been! I can't say anything more rational at the moment.

  • Comment number 60.

    26. mitchell was staked so that really is the end...also read TW's bit under the video

though it pains me to say it..its the right time ...a star as gorgeous and talented as aidan turner deserves to be seen by a bigger audience

we had him to ourselves for a little while but we will love him for ever :-)

  • Comment number 61.

    Oh.

    My.

    Goodness.

  • Comment number 62.

I am gob smacked, on one hand I knew Mitchel was right,on the other I knew George was right, the outcome made me cry cos I didn't want to see Mitchel go and bcos George made me feel so proud. Its amazing what you can do if you love someone enuf to save them from a fate worse than death and stand up against the "old ones"on pain of crucifixion in Regents Park lol.
A note to the cast and crew, basically everyone involved with the show really.....BRAVO,well done, really awesome, totally believable too.I have no adequate words, but the fact that I sobbed my heart out from near as damn the beginning to well past the finish has to count for something.
Wow take a bow guys you rock :D xxx

  • Comment number 63.

Goodnight, Sweet Mitchell! It had to happen, but I didn't want it to! It will never be the same without him!!! Gutted!!!

  • Comment number 64.

I can't. I can't. And I love this show so much I'm sure it's unhealthy. I'm actually crying. I heard the speculation, but I was hoping it wouldn't be true, and that they would all stay friends and eat cotton candy, and ride rainbows. World currently crushed. My Mitchell!

  • Comment number 65.

I was actually OK with it until I read this blog. If it were just what Sir Toby thought was right for the character fine, but so AT can play a dwarf for Peter Jackson? What a lame reason to leave! :-(

  • Comment number 66.

I am in floods of tears but it was certainly brave and even up until the final seconds I still didn't really believe he was going...but for mitchell not to be saved by George at this point would have been wrong some how.

Aidan Turner you have been a total pleasure to watch for the last three series and I hope you have all good things in the fantastic carer that awaits you.

Although I love all the wonderful BH characters I'm not sure BH will ever feel the same again.

Also a huge thank you to Jason for the BEST on screen villian I have ever seen Herrick will be sorely missed x

  • Comment number 67.

*sigh* R.I.P Mitchell. I wonder if theres another series next year?

  • Comment number 68.

I'll come back tommorow to pay tribute properly but I just can't right now, my brain is mush and I'm weeping like a child. Thank you so much Aidan for 3 amazing years with Mitchell. Thank you for the wonderful memories. I have to leave it there. I really just, just, just.............

  • Comment number 69.

    Damn.

  • Comment number 70.

Aiden, you are an amazing actor. Thank you for being one of the pieces of Being Human that made it so epic.

  • Comment number 71.

NOOOOOO NO NO NO NO NO NO No no no no no no no nooo!!! Just no!

  • Comment number 72.

WHY WHY WHY.....Well done you all have managed to leave me in tears agin theis week and may i ask WHY WHY WHY DID you have to KILL MITCHELL..I JUST cant believe it and im Traumatised that being human is over and that MITCHELL'S LIFE IS OVER....*crys*

  • Comment number 73.

I personally thought te cliffhanger from last weeks episode was better...However, I thought Mitchell's death was brilliant and there were no more stories for him without the show becoming tacky. I am hesistant towards the possibility of a series 4 becomes the slogan was always 'three twenty-somethings who also happen to be a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost.' I feel like a part of me has died with the end of Mitchell, but am looking forward to seeing him in future films/tv series. I do want another series, but only if they don't kill the show.

  • Comment number 74.

    OH MY DAYS....
    How can that happen??
I think Mitch will be back meself, tht cnt be IT!
Please dont let that be it :( :(
    ;)

  • Comment number 75.

    again this week sorry

  • Comment number 76.

I'm literally in tears Aidan was my favorite out of all of them & i loved him so mch playing Mitchell & see when he died I totally went a blank and bursted into tears....My brother actually thought i heard that my friend had died because i was cryin so much xx I love you Aidan so much ... good luck to you in the future. xoxoxox - Yvonne x

  • Comment number 77.

hes not comin bk he might be filmin S4 but it will be flashbacks and things like that not aturally him being back once you go black you never go back.

  • Comment number 78.

I actually feel that it was the right way to go. Not if it had been done before the old one (can't remember his name) came in, but definately after. Mitchell would never have escaped his own fate of killing, and would have been trapped in a form of slavery, with the responsibility for George and Nina's lives on his shoulders. One slip and Regent's Park here we come.

No, as much as I'll miss Mitchell, and I really will, I'm ready for S4.

  • Comment number 79.

I was screaming my head off!!! not because of the ending, but because during the very last scene, the teletext came up, as if someone had pressed the red button on my remote. So since the remote was downstairs, I had to go down and switch the teletext off. I blame my mum, who was using the sky remote at the time to put the volume down. I will probably cry myself to sleep tonight A) becuase Mitchell is dead, and B) becuase i couldn't even enjoy the moment because of the (swearing) teletext, I was so distracted my it I couldn't even cry while I was watching it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 80.

I am totally thrown. I thought this was supposed to be all about friendship and love and loyalty, not the moral high ground. Mitchell gave up killing for a while, he could do that again with encouragment, not his supposed friends just nodding yeah you'll be useless we know you will, we'll just kill you for the greater good. Wrong on so many levels. What about the massive risk werewolves pose? Higher than vampires I would have thought since they actually lose sentient knowledge! If there is a fourth series I'm not really interested now. I hope Edgar kills the lot of them and Ninas baby grows claws on the way out.. :D

  • Comment number 81.

Am sad to see Mitchell leaving BH, but I think it was the best way for him to go, being saved from himself by his best friend. Such an emotional finish to the series, but a fantastic one.

Lovely words from Mr Whithouse above.

Best of luck to Mr Turner with the Hobbit & future ventures. But remember, WE WILL MISS YOU AS OUR MITCHELL!! X

  • Comment number 82.

I can't believe gorgeous Mitchell has gone, hopefully there will be a way back for him and we can have a Series 4,but for now Goodbye Mitchell R.I.P.-the characters/acting/writing/production/direction and every other aspect of the creation and filming of the programme was superb and everyone involved in Being Human from its inception to its conclusion should be patting themselves and each other on the back-Congratulations on such a fantastic and thrilling show-Thank You all.

  • Comment number 83.

This is awful. How can they kill the fittest guy in the universe? He is the best actor the series had, and this is the biggest mistake. I LOVE Mitchell and now his character is gone I think 'being human' is dead. How can they go on without a vampire character? They cant replace Mitchell, and who will be George's best friend? Truly the worst mistake that could be made. Annie, Nina and George have no purpose after this. Goodbye Mitchell. I LOVE YOU.

  • Comment number 84.

Wish they hadn't ended it with "and next series, 2 werewolves and a ghost against the super-vampire". It should have ended completely, leaving us thinking what a wonderful, fantastic show it had been. Not dragging it on having lost the original idea of the 3 flatmates trying be be human.
I can understand Mitchell being killed off, but what a disappointing overall end to 3 wonderful series.

  • Comment number 85.

I need to log off now. Can't even face the behind the scenes.

    Hugs to all the bloggers

  • Comment number 86.

:( Mitchell was such an amazing character

  • Comment number 87.

And there they stand these brave three.
    Starring into eyes of eternity.
Knowing of plans dark and deep.
    Whilst humanity is still asleep.
As old ones stir their wisdom tainted.
This desire for power never sated.
As their friend by love is gone.
It is the beginning of a new song.
Destiny falls now on to them.
their souls as bright as any gem.
Their fate now rest upon their courage.
    As all around is Death

  • Comment number 88.

wow....there is sooo totally going to be a series four, thats pretty clear to me, I mean that end shot of the remaining three was just crying out to be a lead up to nina, george and annie kicking ass. Also, I think that the old ones will be even more fantastic than Herrick, dare I say. For me, the series will be a lot less shiny with no AT, but then I did say that I'd never enjoy Doctor Who as much post Tennant, and have recently had to admit that Smith is as good, if not better, so hey, I may think the same in regards to the divine-ness that is AT. I defintely think we need a series four....if only to finish off Annie and George's character arcs...both of them need to become the people that they could be...ass kicking and truly part of humanity, which they aint quite there yet...we need to see Annie be super ghost for a start....

So yeah, off to watch old BH eps and sob about tonight's finale...

  • Comment number 89.

Never liked vampire/warewolf stuff till i discovered being human, and i haven't missed an episode. It won't be the same without Mitchell!! But what a good ending, very sad but superb, and I think everyone will just love George that little bit more after tonight. with all the best wishes in the world for Aidan Turner in his future career, and thanks for an outstanding role in Being Human. xx

  • Comment number 90.

I'm still going to buy the box set because I admire the show so much, but I don't know if I'll be able to bear ever watching that last episode again. Aidan Turner is a great actor. If you do do a series four, I will only watch it if you promise us some scenes from George's memory where we have nice times with Mitchell... because I've completely lost my muse for this series.

  • Comment number 91.

    you made my Wife cry!!!

  • Comment number 92.

OMG!!!!! Nooo Mitchell i dont want to beleive it
amazing episode but i am in shock if this is the end of of mitchell then i want to say how amazing an actor aiden turner is and i hope to see him on my tv or on the big screen soon XD
if not then i cant wait wooohooo aiden rocks
    seriously i luv this show
    xxx

  • Comment number 93.

I cant believe Mitchell has gone :-((( what a gr8 ending made me cry poor George he had to do it and only he could do it, what a gr8 cast and we will miss you Aiden!!

  • Comment number 94.

I just....Cnt get my thoughts straight.

    Cnt belive hes gone.

    RIP John Mitchell

  • Comment number 95.

I was reading the entry and it says:

"And certainly right up until the shooting script of episode 8, Mitchell was still going to be undead and kicking when the credits rolled.

But then Peter Jackson came along. And it turns out he's a fan of the show. Oh Irony, I could punch you in the neck. "

I'm terribly sorry to say but...it shows. As I said before, it seemed really rushed and choppy. I might not get lots of fans here tonight but that's what I Think, sadly.

  • Comment number 96.

OMG!!!! that was amazing, I was shouting at my TV dont do it george!! beautiful shot and acted well done to all involved, and good luck Adian with the hobbit x

  • Comment number 97.

Lovely, brilliant series! It was a joy and honor to ride along with you Toby, Lenora, Russell,Aidan, Sinead, Jason, and everyone who brought these stories and characters to life! To Mr. Aidan Turner, may all the righteous desires of your heart come true. Good luck and God Bless to all!

  • Comment number 98.

Annie unbelievable as well. Couldn't take her at all seriously when saying he was the love of her life given the rest of this episode and the fact she didn't go with him to the afterlife. I'd personally hope for a bit more from the love of my life??!

  • Comment number 99.

oh my god cant believe mitchell has gone im in tears it was so sad

  • Comment number 100.

In case you think I'm really hard, I did cry and shouted NO at the TV. But I have lovely memories of his - neighbours round for tea and biscuits, setting Annie up with Gilbert, getting Annie back. RIP, finally, my lovely lovely Mitchell
