In pictures: V&A extension
The Victoria and Albert museum has unveiled proposals by seven architectural teams hoping to design a new courtyard and underground extension for the London landmark.
The project will create a purpose-built gallery, a public courtyard and a new entrance on Exhibition Road.
More than 110 architectural teams from all over the world expressed interest in the project.
A jury chaired by V&A trustee Steve McGuckin chose the seven practices. Jurors are now visiting existing projects by all the architects to help make their final decision, which will be announced later this month.
Mr McGuckin said the chosen teams had submitted "highly creative and well thought-out designs" for the proposed development.
One of the candidates, Los Angeles-based firm Michael Maltzan Architecture, designed the temporary home for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Another team under consideration, Jun Aoki & Associates, mainly specialise in the residential, retail and cultural sectors.
Recent projects the Tokyo-based company has been involved in include the Aomori Museum of Art and the "White Chapel" in Osaka.
Other projects Jamie Fobert Architects have been involved in include extensions for Tate St Ives in Cornwall and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge.
The practice works within historic environments and was established in 1996.
Heneghan.peng.architects have designed a pedestrian footbridge for the 2012 Olympic Park in east London.
The V&A project forms part of the Exhibition Road semi-pedestrianisation scheme planned by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
British architect Amanda Levete has been on the board of trustees of the Architecture Foundation and was involved in creating the Lord's cricket ground media centre, winner of the 1999 Stirling Prize.
Models of the proposals will be on display at the Victoria and Albert's Sackler Centre until 3 April.
