Finucane death threat condemned

Sinn Fein has condemned a threat they say has been made by dissident republicans against the brother of Pat Finucane as "beyond contempt".

Gerry Kelly said the threat against community worker Seamus Finucane came from the dissident republican group, Oglaigh na hEireann (ONH).

"People across Belfast are angry this morning at the actions of ONH," he said.

In a statement the PSNI said it did not discuss the security of individuals.

Mr Finucane has been involved in community work in west Belfast's Upper Springfield area for a number of years.

His brother Pat was murdered by loyalists in 1989.

Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly said: "This is not the first time community workers have come under threat from one of these armed gangs.

"Last year, CIRA threatened community workers in north Belfast with a similar statement. Like then, a united community, political and trade union response is required to this latest threat."

He said Mr Finucane had spent his entire life "involved in republican activism".
