Suspected arson at former Mexborough fire station

Firefighters in South Yorkshire have tackled a fire after a suspected arson attack at one of their former stations.

They were called out to the former Mexborough fire station shortly after 0200 GMT on Saturday, where they found the first floor on fire.

Some 25 firefighters brought the blaze under control by 0630 GMT, only to return later when the fire reignited.

A South Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said the fire was believed to have been started deliberately.

The building in Highwoods Road, Mexborough, was closed in April after it was replaced by a state-of-the-art station at nearby Manvers.
