This micro financing strategy is a tool that gives small loans to society's poorest women to start their own businesses. Despite being hailed as a solution to world poverty in recent years, it has only served to dig some of India's poorest deeper into debt.

Roodman compares microcredit to a drug that is only effective when taken in moderation.
