Sounds Of The 20th Century Ep 7/50

Thursday 19 May
10.00-11.00pm BBC RADIO 2

Sounds Of The 20th Century is an audio journey through five decades of triumph, tragedy and trivia in 50 hour-long episodes, introduced by Jeremy Vine.

It's 1957, a year when Britain gets a new Prime Minister and Russia wins the space race by launching the first sputnik. On television, the kids are watching Six-Five Special; a schoolboy from Esher makes his TV debut in a skiffle group; and mum and dad are baffled by Panorama's April Fools Day hoax.

Meanwhile, Jack Jackson is spinning the platters that matter on Radio Luxembourg. Elvis is All Shook Up, Tommy Steele is Singing The Blues and there's a Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.

DYLAN AT 70
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan – A Folk Tribute

Thursday 19 May
11.00pm-12.00midnight BBC RADIO 2

As BBC Radio 2 celebrates Bob Dylan's 70th birthday, the cream of the British folk scene re-interpret songs from his iconic album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Mark Radcliffe guides listeners through a collection of specially recorded songs that illustrate Dylan's great writing skills and the inventiveness and creativity of British folk artists.

The guest list includes Martin Carthy, Seth Lakeman, Ralph McTell, Cara Dillon, Billy Bragg and Martin Simpson and winner of the Horizon Award at the 2011 Radio 2 Folk Awards, Ewan McLennan.

The songs from this hugely influential album are performed in its original order and feature a series of stunning new versions. Freewheelin' was Dylan's second studio album, initiating the process of writing contemporary words to traditional melodies. Several tracks are now regarded as classics of the Sixties folk scene, including Blowin' In The Wind and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall.

The Essay – The Mystical Turn Ep 4/5

Monday 16 to Friday 20 May
10.45-11.00pm BBC RADIO 3

Dr Jane Shaw, Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, explores the life and writings of the little-known English mystic Adela Curtis, in the fourth programme of the series.

Mystic, vegetarian, bookseller, sewage expert and much more besides, Adela Curtis was a remarkable woman. Born in 1864, she lived to the age of 96. After running a restaurant and bookshop in Kensington she went on to found her own religious order for women – the Order of Silence – in Coldash, near Newbury in Berkshire. Members were celibate, vegetarian and contemplative, but the Order was not aligned with any particular church.

In 1921, aged 57, Adela Curtis retired to live near Burton Bradstock in Dorset. Her followers visited with such frequency that a new community was formed. Visitors came from far and wide and Aldous Huxley thought Adela Curtis, who died in 1960, one of the greatest living mystics.

Afternoon Play – Macmillan's Marvellous Motion Machine

Thursday 19 May
2.15-3.00pm BBC RADIO 4

This is the true story of Scots blacksmith Macmillan who invented the pedal bicycle in 1840, written by Jules Horne.

Young Scots country blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan is a man of ideas, such as the velocipede – a clanking, pedalled contraption which was the ancestor of the modern bike.

The cranky, smoky voice of the velocipede is the narrator, and Kirkpatrick's constant companion. Kirkpatrick has been working on the velocipede for the past two years. Dreaming of fame, he's oblivious to girls' attentions; smitten instead with his velocipede, he's going to ride the 70 miles from Dumfries to Glasgow. But he arrives in Glasgow only to be ridiculed and sent packing, while someone else takes the invention onwards.

The cast stars Scott Hoatson as Kirkpatrick Macmillan, John Kazek as the machine, Gabriel Quigley as Catherine, Gavin Mitchell as Duke, Isabella Jarrett as Duchess and Leo MacNeill as Wee Toddy.
