Annie Lennox was among a number of entertainment, military and sporting personalities honoured by the Queen during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The former Eurythmics singer was awarded an OBE for her charity work in Africa.
Tony McCoy, one of Britain's most successful jump jockeys, also received an OBE. The jockey, who was joined by three-year-old daughter Eve and wife Chanelle, said he spoke to the Queen about horses and she was "pretty knowledgeable on her racing".
Lt Cdr Peter Higgins was among a number of a military service personnel to be recognised at the ceremony. Lt Cdr Higgins was decorated with the Air Force Cross for services during the rescue of 31 mariners from a sinking merchant ship.
During the Buckingham Palace ceremony, Marine Lewis Lockwood, of the Royal Marines, was decorated with the Military Cross, for his services in Afghanistan.
Songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson, who was a member of folk group Fairport Convention, said he spoke briefly to the Queen about his music and joked: "She said she had all of my albums."
The families of two soldiers who were killed trying to help rescue an injured colleague received military crosses awarded posthumously to their loved ones. Cpl Matthew Stenton, 23, of the Royal Dragoon Guards, and L/Cpl Stephen Monkhouse, 28, of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, were killed in Afghanistan last year.
