A marketplace echoes with memories of war

For almost four years in the 1990s, Sarajevo was a battleground. Bosnian Serb forces controlled nearby hills, and their gunners pounded the city below. By the time the fighting ended 16 years ago, many thousands of people had been killed.

In the peace and calm of today, Sarajevo might seem to be developing and moving on. But Fatima Manji found scars of the past which are still there for all to see.

"Mzungu! Mzungu!"

Sometimes, being a foreigner in a community has its advantages. The outsider brings a fresh eye, and might see some things a little more clearly. They might make out patterns of behaviour, or traits of character that the locals just don't notice. Jonathan Bigg has been able to cast a stranger's eye over life near where he's living in Tanzania.
