About 70 tyres have been illegally dumped in a Devon lay-by.

Mid Devon District Council said it was alerted to the fly tipping on the A3072 between Bickleigh and Crediton by residents last week.

The council described fly tipping as a blight on the area's streets and countryside and it typically dealt with about with 20 incidents a month.

Anyone convicted of fly tipping faces a fine of up to £50,000 and/or up to five years in jail.

Simon Newcombe, the authority's environmental enforcement manager, said: "We depend on the public to be the eyes and ears of the community.

"As soon as we hear about it, we investigate for evidence and send one of our crews out to clear it up - and whenever we can we'll take action against those responsible.''
