Skrillex has come 4th in the BBC Sound of 2012 countdown. Los Angeles born Skrillex (aka Sonny Moore) already has an impressive track record for a 23 year old. Though he'd been dabbling with making electronic music since his early teens (Aphex Twin and The Prodigy were early influences), he first came to public attention as the singer for post-hardcore 'screamo' band From First To Last.
He managed two albums with them before leaving to go solo in 2007. A number of demos, collaborations and low key free digital releases followed, till 2010's My Name is Skrillex EP kicked off an impressive run of activity including production work with Californian nu-metallers Korn and our own Bring Me The Horizon.
His hyperactive, no holds barred combination of dubstep, hardcore and noise (sometimes referred to as 'brostep') caught the attention of Deadmau5, whose mau5trap label released the second Skrillex EP. Remixes for Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and The Black Eyed Peas have followed and in August 2011, Moore announced he was setting up his own label, OWSLA as well as collaborating with Pendulum side project Knife Party. Whatever feelings this young man might stir up on dubstep forums, we're going to be hearing a lot of the Grammy nominated producer in the next year (very possibly soundtracking a computer game ad...).

@Gezza - I'd love to share your optimism but when institutions like the BBC announce artists like Skrillex and Flux Pavillion as 'ones to watch' it is clear to me that EDM as a whole is being assimilated into the mainstream pool of commercialised music that is all about 'fashion' and 'gimmick' and has lost its original meaning as a voice for those who want to remain outside of consumerist culture. Skrillex has been around since 2010, and the only thing that this 'competition' signifies is that this music, which should be by and for the people who want an independent voice in this world, is being 'discovered' (read: exploited) by the capitalist culture industry, with the helping hand of artists like Skrillex, whose hunger for fame or profit has made them forget who made them in the first place.

Paddy C ..... musical genres don't die they evolve. Now we have diverse flavours of dubstep and Skrillex is one of them but pure dubstep is still here.

@ThatSingingGuy: Skrillex is only recent news for the BBC mainstream site. He's been touring UK much of the year (2011) and getting massive crowds. At Global Gathering in the Autumn he drew as big an audience as any of the other acts and the tent was totally jam-packed.
He certainly didn't kill dubstep as only part of his sound is dubstep. Did Noisia or Flux Pavillion kill dubstep?
Anyways he is guilty of bringing something fresh and exciting to dance music. His gigs are insane and at the rate he tours I'm sure he will continue to build support.

I love Skrillex. Frankly surprised he's on this list, he's already big news over here in the States. But then, people do keep underestimating his popularity - at Austin City Limits, they obviously put him on a much smaller stage than the crowd were expecting, because the crush was insane. Amazing gig though.
