Brooklyn five-piece Friends formed in 2010 after a bedbug infestation forced a group of vegan restaurant co-workers to cohabitate for a week. Within the confines of an appartement Matthew Molnar, Oliver Duncan and Lesley Hann were to discover the joys of her childhood friend Samantha Urbani's back catalogue of solo savings.
Urbani had spent the previous months in Berlin and had a laptop selection ready to be cultivated by her temporary housemates and final band-member Nikki Shapiro. The week culminated in Urbani's birthday party and a show for 30 of their friends under the name Perpetual Crush.
That name was soon to be discarded in favour of, Brian Wilson's favourite Beach Boys album, Friends, but the newly formed quintet's self-described "weird pop" and mid set instrument swapping preserved as the group were quickly upgraded to New York's CMJ showcase. Single I'm His Girl further cemented interest from the blogging world while the Brooklynites ended the year with regular plays on 6 Music and a plays on NME's top 50 artists of 2011.
