Milestone School wins recycled plastic picnic bench

The school is collecting plastic bags, wrappers and bubble wrap

A special school in Gloucester is asking people to donate old plastic bags to be turned into a picnic table.

Milestone School has been chosen as the South West winner of a bakery's recycling competition.

Now it needs as many plastic bags and wrappers and as much bubble wrap and shrink film as possible before 2 April.

The effort is being backed by Gloucestershire County Council. Its staff at Shire Hall are busy collecting plastic to pass on to the school.

'Excellent project'

Councillor Stan Waddington, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: "This is an excellent project which truly demonstrates the benefits of recycling."

Schools were asked to explain what they were doing for the environment.

Milestone said it recycled items including paper, batteries, printer cartridges, stamps, plastic bottles and cardboard.

It had created a natural area to encourage wildlife and plants and was also conserving water by regulating the toilet flushes.

British Polythene Industries, which has a site in Stroud, will produce the picnic benches on behalf of the bakers Warburtons.
