Leonard Cheshire

Leonard Cheshire supports people to live, learn and work wherever they are, and whatever their ability. In Zambia, and other parts of Africa, many children are kept from attending school because they have a disability. Leonard Cheshire’s Inclusive Education project has helped break down the barriers faced by disabled children in Africa. The project supports schools to be inclusive with equipment like crutches, training for teachers, and to adapt buildings with ramps and accessible toilets. This means children are able to attend mainstream schools, and fulfill their potential.

Helen, (whose story you hear in the appeal) faced the stigma of being disabled, and was left out of school and hidden away. Without an education, Helen’s life would have been one of isolation, fewer prospects and extreme poverty. 

Nelson is no longer isolated from his friends or his community. His new school St Anne’s in Chipata, Zambia is able to support him to fulfil his potential.

Following a health assessment, Elvis was provided with adjustable supports for his leg and is now able to attend school with his friends. With your donation we can ensure more children have the right support to go to school, to grow and to learn.
