  1. New health centre could replace Teignmouth Hospital

    Daniel Clark

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Teignmouth Hospital could close if proposals for a new health centre in the town go ahead.

The purpose-built site could see GPs, the multi-disciplinary health and wellbeing team, voluntary sector partners, and some outpatient clinics brought under one roof.

Several different sites in the town are being considered, with the current hospital site and East Cliff Car Park both viable options.

The proposals will go to public consultation for six weeks from 20 April.

  6. New solution unveiled for bin collections in Cornwall

    Kieran Bell

Wheelie bins could help reduce the amount of litter on the streets of Cornwall and drive up recycling rates, councillors were told this week.

Current figures show that just 35% of waste in Cornwall is currently recycled but the council has set itself a target of 48%.

Following an inquiry into rubbish collections held by the neighbourhoods overview and scrutiny committee, new container options were on display at County Hall, with wheelie bins, seagull-proof sacks, trolley boxes and an assortment of other bags and sacks being proposed.

No firm proposals have been drawn up but a decision is expected to be considered on 24 May when a recommendation is made by the committee.

Verity Palk, team leader for waste and environmental contracts at County Hall, said: “There are benefits in that we can control the amount of waste that is put out and there are also benefits from a health and safety perspective for collecting crews."

    BBC News Online

Police are investigating a care home in Perranporth over safeguarding concerns.

Residents of Sunningdale House have been removed by Cornwall Council after concerns were raised over the quality of care.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We are in the early stages of what is likely to be a protracted and fairly complex investigation."

Sunningdale House remains open but the owners, South West Care Homes, have replaced the home's management team.

The company said: "Care wasn't reaching its usual high standards."

In a statement, Cornwall Council said: "We are working closely with families and partners and support is available for those people who fund their own care if they wish to move."

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) have visited the home twice in the last month.

A CQC report is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
