Catch-up: Germany v Mexico

Germany head coach Joachim Low does not share our excitement about a potential Germany v Brazil match in the last-16. He says: "I certainly don't care about that. The round of 16, I don't waste any thought on that. It is all about the next match and being better."

Low is told that a number of former World Cup winners have failed to qualify from the group phase four years later. He replies: "We will not suffer that fate, we will make it to the next round.

"In tournaments this (losing a match) can happen and you have to accept it. We will not become reckless. We will continue to look forward. There is no reason to panic. We have three matches and ample opportunities to correct this result."

Germany head coach Joachim Low: "We knew we had to be stable in these first matches but very often, in an unfamiliar way, we looked nervous and in the first half it did not happen and we will have to analyse why it happened."

Germany head coach Joachim Low: "In the first half the impression was that we were not as dynamic as we usually are and in the second half I didn't have the impression we were losing strength.

"It was not a lack of stamina that meant we could not turn the match around. As a player in a World Cup you have to accept pressure.

"We will certainly not change our match plan. In the first half, to a large extent, the players were coming back trying to recover the ball instead of playing deep, if we are not more incisive we will lose the ball. We have to focus on our strong points."

Germany will probably still win it.

Just throwing this out there though - IF Germany finished second in Group F there's every chance they could play Brazil in the last 16.

More from Joachim Low, who says: "In the first half we played very badly, we were not able to impose our usual way of playing, attacking and there were lots of counter attacks against us and we were very vulnerable.

"In the second half we were able to press more, but Mexico drew back and then carried the ball forward fast. We had a couple of shouts, but it seemed jinxed and the ball did not go into the goal. Everybody is really unhappy and crestfallen but we have to put this behind us. Our team has experience of losses."

Germany head coach Joachim Low: "Indeed it is disappointing to have lost the first match, that it is a situation we are not used to at all.

"In many tournaments we have always won the first match but we have to accept this. There can be obstacles to overcome and in the next match we must be much better."

Mexico now go on to play South Korea next Saturday, before ending up against the Swedes.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said: "What is the most important thing for Mexican football is to grow. We need to prepare for the next match and prepare it thoroughly.

"When we scored I just sat down and considered the plan for the next five minutes."

Asked if Mexico are now favourites to win the group, Juan Carlos Osorio said: "Sweden will be a tough nut to crack, they have had great competitions in Europe, at World Cups and also left Italy out of the World Cup.

"We will look to Sweden and see how far we can get. We competed at a very high level against a world champion."

If Osario said the word 'protagonists' in his post-match presser, get him to the Premier League immediately.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said: "We had drawn up a plan six months back, due to injuries we had to change some of our protagonists but we always thought of having two quick players on the wing. We chose Herving Lozano, who is our fastest player, and we wanted to hurt them on the counter attack.

"In all due respect in the first half we were the better team. In the second half they tried to attack more and we prepared their use of Mario Gomez up front yesterday. We practised defending with four midfielders and three players up front and that is almost how we got the second goal.

"We showed we have a bright future and I am very satisfied with what we did. This is a great game, we are going to celebrate responsibly and prepare this for the next match. I want to dedicate this to all the Mexican fans who made the journey out here and everyone who supports us. Those who do not support us, we will try to convince them to support us.

"We played with bravery when it was needed and also defended with all of our hearts."

More from Mexico goalscorer Hirving Lozano, who said: "Thank God it was a great result for the team and to get this (man of the match award) means a lot to me.

"I would have to agree it is the best goal I have scored in my life. We all dream of playing in the World Cup."

One of the best games I have seen in my life. Germany had no plan B, no clear chances and no defensive intelligence.
