  2. 'Being England manager is a privilege and an honour'

    Sweden 0-2 England

    BBC Radio 5 live

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Gareth Southgate said: "It was a game I was concerned about earlier in the week because of the emotional and physical energy we had to exert against Colombia. We knew the game would be stop start against Sweden. Defensively we dealt with most things well, and when we didn’t, our goalkeeper was outstanding. We created opportunities in attack even though the opposition made it difficult for us, and our football flowed well."

Asked about the optimism now surrounding the squad, Southgate added: "Managing expectations is going to be a bit difficult. We are privileged to be here and to be England manager is an honour. We are here because of the players as well of the staff. We have senior pros that haven’t played as much, but have carried on with smiles on their faces, and we are here because of them as well as the boys that have featured more."

  3. 'Southgate is a modern day coach'

    Sweden 0-2 England

    Chris Waddle

Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Gareth Southgate is a modern day coach. He trusts his players and he is friendly to them. The ones we had were like bullies and you were scared of them at times. He gives his players the encouragement to go and play and then he mixes with them and he doesn't just talk to them about football.

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Sport: "We knew it was going to be such a different game after having extra time and penalties against Colombia with all the emotion and the energy.

"We had to withstand a lot of physical pressure but the resilience of the team was crucial. We knew we would have the majority of the ball and it was a case of breaking them down because Sweden are a really well organised team.

"Over the years we have underestimated them.

"I'm really pleased for Dele (Alli). He is best at making those runs for the goal and he can finish. I'm really pleased for him because that's some drought for him.

"We don't know who we play yet. Russia in Moscow would be an incredible game to be involve in. Let's see. I hope everyone at home enjoys tonight because it's not often that happens.

    "It is an incredible feeling."

  7. 'We will be ready to go again'

    Sweden 0-2 England

    BBC Radio 5 live

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Harry Kane said: "It was a very mature performance in such a high pressure game. We knew we would have lots of possession but I thought we controlled it well and we moved it quickly. We are delighted to have got the first goal from a set-piece because we have worked hard on the training ground and we needed Jordan (Pickford) to pull off a number of saves in the second half. We played the way we said we would and we attacked the game. Now we are one step closer."

Asked about his preferred opposition for the semi-final, Kane added: "Whoever. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but it’s about us as a team. Whoever we play, we will be ready to go again."

  13. First international goal on the biggest stage

    Sweden 0-2 England

    BBC Radio 5 live

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Harry Maguire said: "It was my first international goal on the biggest stage of them all. Going into a World Cup semi final, it doesn't get much better than that."

Asked about his contribution from set-plays, Maguire said: "A high percentage of goals in knockout games come from set-plays and we have worked hard on them. The deliveries have been brilliant and we have managed to get our heads on them."

Asked about his personal development, Maguire added: "It’s a remarkable rise I have had over the last year or two. At the moment I'm in a bubble and maybe I'll realise my achievement over time. It's another massive game in the semi and one that we will have belief in."

  14. 'My wife is a machine'

    Sweden 0-2 England

    Fabian Delph

England midfielder Fabian Delph: "It is hard to put into words. It has been an amazing week. Thanks to Gareth (Southgate) for letting me go home for the birth of my third child. It was hard for me. I think it was the penalties that brought on the labour. I've got Hendo to thank for that. To go to the next round is amazing.

"It is crazy (having made a trip back to the UK). I tried to explain to some of the boys what is like back home. We are in our bubble out here. But it is scary. Even people who are not into football. I was getting stopped on the school run.

"The baby is fantastic. It was our third home birth. My wife is a machine. We are caught in two minds on the name. It has been great and I am so happy to have gone home to share that moment."
