Harry Winks: Spurs trophies 'round the corner' says England midfielder

Everyone here wants to win trophies, says Winks

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks feels it is only a matter of time before the club end their trophy drought under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino took charge in 2014 and led Spurs to the Champions League final in May, only to be beaten by Liverpool.

Their 2008 League Cup triumph remains Spurs' only trophy in two decades.

Winks, who started the 2-0 defeat by Liverpool, said: "As long as we keep believing in what we have to do... I'm sure [trophies] are round the corner."

"Everybody is ambitious in the squad," added the 23-year-old lifelong Spurs fan, who signed a new five-year contract with the club earlier this month.

"Of course there comes a time when players want to start winning trophies. But there is a bigger picture at Tottenham."

With their new 62,000-capacity stadium now open and £53.8m record signing Tanguy Ndomele added to Pochettino's squad, Tottenham look well placed to challenge near the top of the Premier League again this season, having finished in the top four for four seasons in a row for the first time since the 1960s.

Winks and Ndombele are both in a squad also including Toby Alderweireld and Cristian Eriksen that travelled to Singapore for the first game of the club's two-match tour of Asia, against Juventus on 21 July.

"You can feel the family atmosphere the manager has created," said Winks.

"Everyone gets on really well. There are no big egos - no-one gets on better with one person than anyone else.

"We obviously have incredible talent in the squad but when you have that, mixed with humble attitudes and players who want to improve, that can only breed success.

"The manager brought me through at the age of 17 to where I am today. It has been an incredible journey and one I want to stay on."

Long time Spurs fan and I beg to differ. The current crop of players have had decent chances and bottled it when it matters. The performance against Liverpool in the CL final was diabolical. Liverpool were at 50% and spurs did F all.

There's nothing wrong in winks showing a little confidence but it's difficult for teams currently in the premiership with man city spending hundreds of millions every transfer window, the quicker we get the investigators to expose the truth the better for football, no team should be allowed to compete in competitions if they are deemed to be breaking rules in these competitions.

They didn't lay a glove on ultra defensive Liverpool in the CL final.
The players and club lack a winning mentality.

That’s never been challenged, and no sugar daddy ever will because nobody is fooled by sugar daddy success. It’s hollow, it lacks merit, it invites ridicule. Look at Man City, they have thousands of empty seats at 99% of home games. Chelsea (in a much smaller stadium) now have empty seats. Apathy. None of it carries merit.

People on here make me laugh Spurs are still massively over achieving by anyones standards compared to rest of top 6 and to be honest rest of PL we spend nothing -68 million net spend in last 5 years compared to City -583, Man U -421, Liverpool -114, Chelski -136, Arses -178. Expectations arent as high. I have supported Spurs for 30 years and these last 5 have been best by along way.

They had the chance to win a trophy, Liverpool were poor, still won, lost the league to Leicester (no disrespect, fantastic achievement by LCFC). Lost their RB, could lose Rose, could lose Eriksen, could lose Alderweireld...... When Poch and Kane leave (and they will),Spurs won't even get top 4.

Winks is SERIOUSLY overrated as well

The truth is Spurs are not a trophy winning team. What they are is a team that consistently punches well above those teams who should be trophy winning teams that have the players and obscene wage bill's who consistently underachieve which results in their supporters projecting their disappointment and embarrassment the hold for their own team failures on to them.

Not a Spurs supporter.
