Chelsea hold on to beat Hull and reach fifth round

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm pleased. You can never take these games for granted. There was a full house here. I know that is not always the norm so the atmosphere was bigger.

"In the first half Hull weren't great, and that's no disrespect because in the second half they were really good and put us under pressure. The first half was our time, when they were not quite at it, to finish the game. We had one-on-ones through the middle with their keeper. We got a little bit sloppy when we thought we were playing well and we didn't really capitalise on chances, which imparts a bit of pressure.

"The cup tie carried on into the 94th minute because of us and because Hull gave it everything to try and get back in the game.

"The game was in the balance [when we scored our second]. You could sense it. So yes, the second goal was big for us because it gave us a cushion."

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, speaking to BT Sport: "The good news is we are in the hat, the bad news is that it is a small example of our season. We had the game in our grasp and we play in nice patterns to finish them. But when they don't come off you need to keep trying them. When we play well we are a good team but we don't finish the game. We caused our own problems.

"It is a hard one. We work hard in front of goal and it is not coming off for us. It is going to define you. I feel like a broken record. We have the larger share of possession and shots on goal but not making those count.

"There is more goals to be had and control of the game. You can't bemoan your luck, such as a deflection with the Hull goal. It is frustrating. We are making mistakes and allowing them to run two on tow in the last few minutes.

"This is us. There are some players resting or injured back at the training ground. But this is the constant message from me. If we can't accept these examples in front us. Newcastle was the same. Arsenal was the same. The message is clear.

"There is no movement to speak of now. We got a punishment in the summer and it is meant to hurt you. We lost one of the biggest players in our history in Eden Hazard. That is the situation. My job is to work every day on the training ground to make the players better. We lost ground last summer and we need to make moves now to take us forward. The money of it is not my job but I have to be honest and truthful. Short term recruitment is something we have to get right."

And what did Frank Lampard think?

Hull manager Grant McCann, speaking to BT Sport: “We had chances today, and I thought we played well in the second half - we just didn’t take the best of our opportunities and, against a top team like Chelsea, you get punished for that."

On his side’s Championship game against Huddersfield on Tuesday: “The league is our number one, we tried today - we had seven or eight players out through injury - and we gave it a good go.

“The boys gave it a really good shot. So, look, the concentration for us now is on the league. It is a big, big game for us on Tuesday and we will try to respond.”

A tricky evening for Chelsea but they're through and are in the hat for the fifth-round draw.

John Murray spilled coffee over his only pair of trousers for the weekend during his commentary earlier. He is currently driving up to the North West with said trousers drying on the back shelf of his car, in preparation for his commentary on Manchester City v Fulham tomorrow.

It's to be confirmed but it looks like the replays will be on the 4th/5th of February. TV picks to come, of course.

Losing today to West Brom reserves, I can understand the frustrations of West Ham fans. But some might be happy they are out of the FA Cup.

Blues defender Fikayo Tomori: "We could have killed the game in the first half. We said at half-time that we need to be solid at the back. My goal came at a good time but it got difficult at the end.

"It is a one-off game and teams will go for it. If we got the third it is easy but we had to ride it out."

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta, speaking to BT Sport: "We have to improve our game if we want to improve as a team and go far. It is not the first game where we don't manage the game well. We were punished.

"First half the first chance we have we score and we have chances to score more but we stopped playing our game. If we want to play against the best and fight for trophies we need to improve.

"We are a team and the season is long. We are fighting in three competitions. Our objective is to go as far as possible. It is our job to be in the best shape possible."

Fikayo Tomori is the match-winner tonight with his second-half header. Chelsea had 16 shots to Hull's 14.

Hull are seven points of the play-off places, with a game in hand on a few of their rivals. Very much in with a shout.

Chelsea are capable of commanding games, for certain spells, but they've got to produce more of that over the 90 minutes. This is a good result for both managers though - a win from Frank Lampard and a win for Grant McCann's team because they never crumbled, never caved in. He leaves here with the crowd delighted, applauding the players off.
