The ancient Scottish capital provides a unique backdrop to the Edinburgh Festivals, with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo taking over the Castle esplanade, Fringe shows in University buildings and crowds of people streaming along Princes Street and the Grassmarket.

We took a look through the huge archive of paintings available at Art UK to see how these well-known spots used to look.
