FA Cup: Gillingham 0-2 West Ham - reaction

Anyone looking for some bonus football tomorrow during the day, there are a few Serie A afternoon fixtures because 6 January is a public holiday in Italy.

We will be bringing you live text commentary of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's return to European football as AC Milan host Sampdoria - as well as Juventus' game with Cagliari.

Both those macthes are at 14:00 GMT.

Gillingham manager Steve Evans talking to BBC Sport: "I'm pleased with the first half, we were by some distance the dominant side but when you dominate against a quality opponent you have to have a goal to show for it.

"We said 'more of the same' but you knew there was going to be a reaction and Moyesy [David Moyes] got a reaction and they were better than us in the second half so no complaints.

"They got a reaction, had a bit more of the ball and he woke them up a bit if I'm honest. But we were in the game in the last five minutes and nothing fell for us. The boys have given us everything as they have done for most of the season.

"He [Moyes] has been a friend for 35-40 years and will be a friend until my last day. I didn't want him to get the West Ham job before this game. He is a good man and will do a great job at West Ham and you could see their strength."

Not sure there's going to be any cup magic in France tonight. Paris St-Germain are away to a sixth-division team ESA Linas Montlhery, whose coach is a PSG season-ticket holder.

The champions lead 2-0 at the break.

West Ham have won their opening two games under David Moyes. In his first spell in 2017-18, they did not win until the fifth match.

David Moyes was asked if he had a bottle of red wine for Steve Evans - with the pair knowing each other from their younger days in Scotland.

"I thought when I come here he serves me the red wine," laughed Moyes.

I thought red wine managerial banter died out when Alex Ferguson retired. I hope it's not coming back to be honest.

West Ham boss David Moyes, talking to BBC Sport: "We're really thrilled. These games have caused us difficulty over the years and Gillingham nearly did that again tonight - they were really good, really competitive, hard to play against but we had a it of quality.

"At half-time I was more disappointed that we had not tried to play enough and not got the ball down enough. The defenders were slashing at clearances and did not show enough composure but it was always going to be this type of game.

"Great credit to the players and they stuck at it and showed great resilience.

"I thought Steve Evans' team did very well and they will think they were a bit unlucky but I thought we could score again on the break."

David Moyes has yet to win a major trophy in his 22-year managerial manager. His trophy cabinet is the 2000 Second Division with Preston and the 2013 Community Shield with Manchester United.

West Ham manager David Moyes, talking to BT Sport, on Pablo Zabaleta's first goal for the club: "Nothing less than expected of Zaba, he's been a great pro for many years."

On West Ham's performance: "We didn't think a lot of our first-half performance, but that was more to do with the way Gillingham played.

"At half-time said we needed to get more of the ball and play better.

"Things went well in the second half after Zaba's early goal, but it was still a tough game. It wasn't easy.

"It is a tough place to come and our players showed great resilience. In the past we might have lost games like this, but we came through it today."

On West Ham's priorities: "You see the reaction of the supporters. They knew how difficult it was. If we can keep going in the cup then we will do so. As always, Premier League is the priority, but I would love to get into a final and win a cup competition."

Gillingham boss Steve Evans has lost all eight of his matches against teams from the Premier League in his managerial career.

He's previously managed Stamford, Boston, Crawley, Rotherham, Leeds, Mansfield and Peterborough.

West Ham goalscorer Pablo Zabaleta speaking to BT Sport: "It was a great performance by the whole team. I had a chance to win the competition with Manchester City, so I know what a very special experience that is.

"We played with the respect the competition deserves. We take it very seriously, which is why I'm so pleased with the team today."

This was Zabaleta's third FA Cup goal. He won the 2011 cup with City.

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice speaking to BT Sport: "It was a really professional performance.

"We looked at them before the game and knew exactly what they would throw at us. They treated throw-ins like free-kicks.

"The old West Ham might have lost last season but we are into the next round and it feels good."

Who do you hope your side get in the FA Cup draw tomorrow? As a Manchester-based Oxford fan, I fancy a trip to Old Trafford or the Etihad Stadium.

Gillingham deserve a lot of credit against a multi-millionaire Premier League team. Because they didn't score they were always going to be vulnerable. West Ham could do better but they will pleased to be through. They kept going through the game, showed their energy and eventually that class shone through.
