Impressive Nadal into fourth round - read the report
Spain's Nadal, 32, won 6-1 6-2 6-4 in their third-round match in Melbourne. The 17-time Grand Slam champion dominated on serve, ruthlessly allowing the 19-year-old to win just 21% of receiving points.
That allowed him to attack De Minaur's serve, breaking five times on his way into the last 16.
De Minaur, seeded 27th, provided incredible resistance to save five match points in what proved to be the final game, eventually succumbing to the sixth - after Nadal received a time violation from umpire Carlos Ramos - when he clubbed a forehand long.
"He's a big fighter and super quick. I played a great game until 40-0," Nadal said. "I played a solid match and want to congratulate Alex for a great start to the season. I think he has a great future."
Earlier today, Petra Kvitova, the eighth seed, maintained her 2019 Australian Open record of not dropping a set as she beat Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 6-1 6-4.
Kvitova, a semi-finalist in 2012, is next up against unseeded American Amanda Anisimova, who has already dumped out 24th seed Lesia Tsurenko and 11th seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Nadal has been very impressive this week, he looks strong but there's still a bit of a question mark over his fitness. On the evidence of tonight he's looking great.
He's serving well, his footwork is good and he'll be hard for anybody to play.
I think we will see a lot of big matches from De Minaur for the next decade at least.
