Michael O'Neill: NI boss committed to current job despite club management speculation

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill has insisted that his focus remains solely on his current job despite admitting that a move into club management is "always attractive".

"It is nice that people recognise the job that you are doing," said O'Neill.

"Of course club football is always attractive and you can never plan too far ahead in football."

Former Newcastle United, Hibernian and Wigan Athletic midfielder O'Neill signed a four-year contract extension with Northern Ireland last February, a month after rejecting the Scotland job.

He has enjoyed considerable success in his current post, guiding Northern Ireland to the Euro 2016 finals before narrowly missing out on World Cup qualification.

"I am under a long-term contract with the IFA and have two very important games in June, that is where my focus is at the minute," he said on Tuesday.

Northern Ireland face trips to Estonia and Belarus next month having won their opening two Euro 2020 qualifiers.

O'Neill, who won two League of Ireland titles with Shamrock Rovers before moving into international management, did not rule out taking a club job in the future.

"The Championship is certainly a very appealing league to work in," he said

"The club game now, there is so much instability in it and the tenure of managers is very short term.

"When you are looking to step out of the situation I am in, you are always looking at what the structure of the club is and that it is right for me."
