  2. 'My players put their bodies on the line'

    FT: South Africa 0-1 China

South Africa captain Janine van Wyk: "It's disappointing for us to walk away with defeat after a hard-fought game. A lack of concentration led to a goal. It was pretty equal. We knew it was going to be a tough match against a Chinese team.

"We could not have done more. I can just say it was a fantastic performance from every single player.

"We are really getting closer to tougher opponents."

    Coach Desiree Ellis:

"They were once again magnificent. We conceded from a set-piece. We lost concentration there. We had ample opportunities.

"We said it would be a battle and like a final. Tonight we showed we are getting close. We gave as good as they gave.

"My players put their bodies on the line."

Niyi: A positive to take away for the South Africans' is their solidity in defence. It has been admirable since the African Cup of Nations. And they have a young team. I see a good and future.

  9. Post update

    South Africa 0-1 China

Remarkably, it's end to end in the final few minutes of this Group B tie.

Thembi Kgatlana is restricted the room to burst into at one end before Kaylin Swart saves well from Yang Li who is one-on-one with the keeper.

That's the closest we have come to a goal in this half as PSG forward Wang Shuang whips a free-kick into the South Africa box, only for a yellow shirt to head the ball onto the roof of the net.

South Africa appeal for a penalty but the referee is unmoved.

The ball is nodded on to Thembi Kgatlana, who loses her footing before slicing the shot, but the ball makes contact with the top of Lin Yuping's chest.

Thembi Kgatlana is playing on the shoulder of the last defender but she has to be careful not to stray offside when her side attempt to go long.
