Mary Beard and guests discuss the vital role music is playing in people's lives during the pandemic. Why do people turn to music in times of crisis?

With cultural institutions around the country closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mary Beard presents from her study at home.

From free concerts streamed by A-list names to benefit singles, cross-balcony singalongs and quarantine choirs, over the past few weeks music has become a more and more vital part of many people’s lives. But why do people turn to music in particular in times of crisis?

Mary interviews choirmaster Gareth Malone about his Great British Home Chorus project which brings singers around the country 'together' online.

And while it has been impressive to see artists adapt to using technology to connect with their fans around the world, will the spirit of sharing change the way music is consumed in the long term? Mary discusses the future of the music industry with violinist Nicola Benedetti and writer and critic Paul Morley.

Plus musician and composer Nitin Sawhney reveals how he has been spending the lockdown, and a special performance by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and his family.
