My Stolen Childhood

Brigitte Sossou Perenyi goes on a journey to understand the centuries-old practice of 'Trokosi', which led to her parents giving her away as a girl to work with priests.

Thousands of women across West Africa have been enslaved by a centuries-old practice called 'Trokosi', whereby girls are forced to live and work with priests in religious shrines to 'pay' for the sins of family members. Brigitte Sossou Perenyi was one of those girls, until she was adopted by an American and moved to the US. Twenty years later, Brigitte goes on a journey to understand what 'Trokosi' really is and why her family gave her away. Part of BBC News's 2018 Highlights season.
