  1. 'Support him in a couple of transfer windows'

    Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal

    Manchester United

Manchester United and Arsenal played out a grim stalemate at Old Trafford that provided compelling evidence to illustrate just how far away from a Premier League challenge both clubs are, says BBC Sport chief football writer Phil NcNulty in his match report.

In a disappointing encounter that was a pale shadow of their mighty clashes of years gone by, Scott McTominay gave Manchester United the lead at the end of an attritional first half with a rising drive from the edge of the area.

Arsenal equalised just before the hour courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's cool finish. It was originally ruled out for offside but the video assistant referee confirmed the striker had been played onside by Harry Maguire.

United legend Roy Keane says former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should "100%" be given more time as manager.

"I think he has been brilliant, a good honest guy. It is hard work at the moment, but there are six or seven young players learning their way," said Keane on Sky Sports.

"We’re all very impatient, we want success yesterday, but you have to give the man time. He is frustrated, under pressure, but dealing with it. He’s a classy guy but no doubt he will be disappointed at not winning enough games.

"They have given him the job, support him in a couple of transfer windows. Are there more tough days ahead? You bet your life, but you need to stick with it. There was a lack of quality from both teams tonight. Their lack of goals, the lack of opportunities they’re creating.

"Give these boys time. But on tonight's performance, none of them [neither Manchester United nor Arsenal] will be in the top four."

  2. 'Steep learning curve'

    Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to BBC Sport: "I thought how many times have we been 1-0 up and not got the second goal? This is a steep learning curve for us and we'll keep working hard and with more experience, we'll make the right decisions.

"I think the start of the second half we didn’t get out of the blocks quick enough. It felt like Arsenal were the more proactive until they scored their goal.

"I felt we could get a goal at the end and we sent men forward. I‘ve been in that situation as a player when you come off and think you could’ve got more out of a game, but we’ll learn from this."

On the VAR decision: "It was the right decision by VAR - but maybe we could’ve had a penalty as well?"

  3. 'I want more'

    Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Unai Emery speaking to BBC Sport: "I want more - more in the result and in the performance but we are progressing. We were competitive but we can do better. We can control moments with the ball better and take more chances in the box.

"We have young players who can take confidence. Bukayo [Saka] is progressing well but we need other players too. This is not the best in terms of points but one point can be good if we win next Sunday against Bournemouth.

"We are very happy with him [Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang] and he is with his goal. We need more players with the ability to score.

"I think Bukayo is getting good performances for us. We are having to play on Thursday and then on Sunday. You have seen the players being competitive."

  4. 'I think we did great'

    Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal defender David Luiz to BBC Sport: "We're happy with the performance. You have to analyse each team performance and I think we did great.

"Even when we went 1-0 down we showed maturity - especially the youngsters who deserve the credit. They’re so young but know how to play football and live with the pressure, they’re more mature than before.

"It was interesting game for the supporters but we did well and so did the other team."

On Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: "I hope he can continue this way as he’s an amazing player, great guy, player and professional – if he can continue this way it'll be great for everyone."

  5. 'Dream to score at Old Trafford'

    Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalscorer Scott McTominay to BBC Sport: "That was an amazing feeling to score tonight, something I've been dreaming about for a long time to score it in a big game at Old Trafford. We're disappointed with the result at the end and I think we deserved more.

"The preparation for the game was good, with the two or three days that we had together. Everyone was putting their all into the sessions. Obviously defeat was hard to take against West Ham but credit to the lads in how they performed, especially during the first 45 minutes.

"It’s a great mix here with the coaching staff and the gaffer has had his say on the style of play. There’s a lot of things to come from this team and hopefully we can take things from these games that we’re dominating.

"In football it’s about fine margins. We’ve got a young, hungry squad at the club who are all dying to play for Manchester United and get the results on the board."

  14. The good and bad of VAR

    Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was both happy and unhappy with the way VAR was used tonight.

On the Arsenal goal he says: "That was VAR at its best tonight and one of the reasons why it has been brought in. But the assistant will be disappointed he has got it wrong, he should be getting it right."

But on the decision to not give Manchester United a penalty after a handball from Sead Kolasinac, Carragher adds: "VAR is basically offsides now, that’s all it does. I think it’s a penalty, sometimes you have to look at things. Is it a penalty or not? Yes, it’s a penalty.

"It’s not a howler, but it’s a penalty, just give it. On the subjective ones, they [VAR] are killing themselves."

Fred Crint: Remember when this fixture was billed as The Irresistible Force versus The Immovable Object? Now it’s more like The Irreversible Farce versus The Immovably Abject.

Ashley Scott: Ok if VAR can overrule offsides, then the linesman should be removed, plain and simple. They're simply not needed.

Goon: This is isn't even about money for United. I don't think any amount could fix this in the short term. The whole structure of the club needs overhauling. And a strong figure head, sorry Ole, you aren't Klopp or Pep and won't be for many a year yet if at all.

  20. 'This was a good point'

    Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Unai Emery, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's not the best result. In the first half they pressed a lot but we controlled the match with good possession. At half-time we spoke about being calm and we tried to find our moment to win the match. After our game they improved little by little. They had some chances to score and at the end I think the draw is a deserved result for both teams.

"We can be better defensively and we are going to sometimes need to do more offensively. I want more control with the ball, to create better chances. But being competitive against Manchester United here is a good point.

"[Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang is very important for us. He is very committed with his work. He is happy and we are happy. I want to give confidence for [Nicolas] Pepe and [Reiss] Nelson to have more chances and to have more possibilities to score."
