  2. No Home Nations – but Solomon Islands make the World Cup (again)

England’s hopes of making the 2020 Futsal World Cup ended in Eboli last month at the main qualifying round when they suffered three defeats to the hosts Italy (1-4), Hungary (0-3) and Belarus (2-5).

That meant that Michael Skubala’s team will not play in the finals in Lithuania in 11 months’ time.

One nation that will be there is the Solomon Islands, the first of the qualifiers, who won the Oceania tournament at the beginning of November by beating New Zealand in the final. The Islanders are the first team to book a spot in the finals in Kaunas, Vilnius and Klaipeda in 2019.

Currently ranked 46th in the world, the Solomons trailed 4-2 to New Zealand before coming back to force penalties and winning the shootout to qualify for their fourth finals in a row. Their one World Cup finals win in 10 games came in Thailand in 2012, when they edged out Guatemala 4-3.

  3. What are the Futsal Home Nations Championships?

The Futsal Home Nations Championships is a three-day event taking place at St George's Park from Friday, 29 November to Sunday, 1 December.

Northern Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland will be participating.

Last year's tournament in Newry, Northern Ireland was won by England. After securing victories over Wales (3-1) and Scotland (3-1) in their opening two fixtures, Michael Skubala's squad faced the hosts in winner-takes-all affair for the title.

Two strikes from Raoni Medina and a Dean Withers goal earned England their second consecutive title with a third successive 3-1 win.

  6. What is futsal?

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small-sided football game that is widely played across the world and is officially recognised by both Uefa and Fifa.

The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill and ability in situations of high pressure, and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football competencies that can be translated into the 11-a-side format of the game.
