Bruno Fernandes: Man Utd in talks with Sporting Lisbon over midfielder

Bruno Fernandes has been linked with a move to Manchester United since last summer

Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon have held face-to-face talks over the transfer of £60m-rated Bruno Fernandes.

Midfielder Fernandes, 25, scored twice as Sporting beat Vitoria Setubal 3-1 in the Portuguese top flight on Saturday.

The Portugal international is keen on a move but there has been no agreement between the clubs over a fee.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his assistant, Mike Phelan, watched Fernandes play against FC Porto on 5 January.

Solskjaer has refused to talk publicly about Fernandes and has insisted the club will only sign long-term targets in the January transfer window, despite injuries to midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

However, it is understood United are prioritising midfield as an area to strengthen.

Solskjaer's side are fifth in the Premier League, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the battle for a Champions League place.

    I’m a Liverpool supporter of over 40 years, but my father has been a lifelong Man United supporter so I have nothing but respect for United. I think this lad is top quality and would likely make an instant impact for them. No one knew who Ronaldo was when he joined United and look how that turned out. Best of luck to him and the club... except on Sunday of course😜

    Why so much bitterness from rival fans over United signing a player, cant you just welcome him to the best League in the World and wish him all the best instead of posting silly comments that add nothing to the discussion.

    Easy to see why liverpool fans are so disgruntled. They should be headlining every paper in europe but still everyone wants to know whats going on at united.

    Are you seriously suggesting Man Utd will challenge next year!? They are 27, 13 and 11 points worse than LFC, MC and Leicester after half a season. MU are improving but I think it may be wise to reset your expectations to avoid disappointment again next year!

    If ole gets lingard out maybe matic, and then brings this guy in, he's strengthening. its going to take time but he's rebuilding. He's inherited players that he doesn't want but they've got contracts it's not easy. But I believe he's got a the nucleus of talented lads and vision for the club.

    There's a slim chance that if Utd buy wisely during the Jan transfer window, they might snatch either 3rd or 4th place from Leics or Chelsea. Whilst it's fairly certain L'pool will win the league, City are likely to get stronger and create a gap from 2nd to the other places. Too much dead wood at Utd at the moment.

    53: Be fair to Fred! I would have said the same three months ago, but he's on the up and def one of our better players this season...(a dubious title for a group of players, I know.)
