  3. 'Large snake' warning at tourist attraction

    Dog walkers at Elvaston Castle have been told to keep their pets on a lead today after a "large snake" was spotted in the grounds.

    Derbyshire County Council posted the warning on Facebook after the snake was seen yesterday afternoon near the path from the Golden Gates to the A6.

    It said the RSPCA had been alerted and two officers from Derbyshire Police's wildlife team had been out to check the area.

    The council said the castle grounds play home to non-venomous grass snakes, which can grow up to 5ft in length, but the species of the latest snake is not known.

  4. Defibrillator stolen from petrol station

    A defibrillator has been stolen from a Leicester service station.

    The orange AD-iPad defibrillator, which was in a case, was taken from a petrol station in Humberstone Road some time between today and last Thursday (14 June).

    PC Nigel Smith said: “A potentially life-saving piece of equipment which has been stolen. We are asking anyone who has any information or anyone who comes across a defibrillator which they believe has been stolen to please make contact with us.”

  5. Opticians 'in shock' over sign fall

    The Alfreton opticians where a sign fell and hit a pedestrian this afternoon has said its staff are "in shock".

    In a statement, Adrian Ellis from Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care said: "Our thoughts are with the gentleman and his family at this time and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.

    "We are all in shock as we have never experienced anything like this in the company’s 80-year history."

    Mr Ellis said the firm was conducting a full investigation with its sign company and would "cooperate fully with the authorities".

    A man has been taken to hospital with head and leg injuries.

    Earlier we told you about an England flag that's been painted on a mini roundabout in Derbyshire. Now we've come across this postbox in Nottingham.

    The painter here is clearly very confident of an England win.

  8. Man injured by falling shop sign

    A man has been taken to hospital after a shop sign fell on him in Alfreton, Derbyshire.

    The sign fell from the Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care in High Street at about 12:15 following a strong gust of wind.

    PCSO Richard Plant from Derbyshire Police tweeted the sign narrowly missed him. He said the man was taken to the QMC for treatment but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

    Ben Shinfield, who lives nearby, said he heard a loud bang.

    He said the sign is about 10ft long and hit the man on the head and legs.

  9. Man in court over robbery and burglary charges

    We told you this morning how a 41-year-old man was due in court today charged with robbery, assault and two counts of burglary.

    Police said he knocked a woman to the ground and stole her handbag on Tuesday near Worksop Railway Station, while earlier the same day he allegedly committed two burglaries.

    At Nottingham Magistrates' Court, Trevor Lowe pleaded not guilty to assault but no plea was entered for the other charges.

    Mr Lowe, of John Street, Worksop, will now appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 19 July in relation to the robbery and burglary charges and is due to appear at Mansfield Magistrates' Court on 28 June in connection with the assault.

    He has been remanded in custody.
