There has been a drop in the number of parents in Guernsey getting their children vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella.

Guernsey's Director of Public Health, Dr Nicola Brink, is calling on parents to have their children immunised after vaccination rates in the Bailiwick dropped from just over 95% two years ago to a current rate of 92%.

A Guernsey endurance swimmer has become the first person from the island to swim around Manhattan and has her sights set on a hat-trick of iconic distance swims.

Rosie Williams has already completed two of distance swimming's "Triple Crown" after swimming across the Channel in 2018 and now under every bridge in Manhattan, New York.

The final remaining challenge is a 21-mile swim from Los Angeles to Catalina.

Although Williams said she will complete the Crown eventually, she wants to focus on local swimming for the time being.

Police are appealing for information after a woman was verbally abused in Jersey.

The woman, in her 40s, was walking along the beach at Greve d‘Azette, between the Dicq Slipway and the slipway at Millard’s Corner, at about 11:50 on Monday.

She was with her mother and her guide dog when she was approached by another woman, who appeared older, and who started shouting at them about their dog, the States of Jersey Police said.

This woman then attempted to remove the dog from its harness by grabbing one of the dog’s legs.

The older woman continued to be abusive and went on to insult the dog owner about being blind, officers added.

She is described as being of medium height, very thin with grey wiry hair and wearing a grey T-shirt with a black animal rights logo on it.

Jersey Chief Minister John Le Fondré and the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Senator Sarah Ferguson, are asking the States to agree to appoint Lynn Pamment as Jersey’s new Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG).

Ms Pamment, who is currently a senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), will take over as Jersey’s C&AG in January, if her appointment is approved.

She has more than 29 years’ experience of working in an assurance and advisory capacity in both the private and public sectors in England and Wales.

The States is due to consider Ms Pamment’s appointment during its sitting on Tuesday 24 September.

The selection process was overseen by the Jersey Appointments Commission.

The former chief executive of the JSPCA has appeared at Jersey's Magistrate's Court, charged with 15 counts of defrauding the animal charity.

Stephen John Coleman, who was born in Gloucestershire but lives in St Lawrence, also faces four counts relating to forged documents.

Some of the charges relate to Christmas bonuses of £60,000.

It is alleged he committed the offences between February 2007 and January 2017.

The 61-year-old has been released on bail.

His case is due to be heard on 17 September, before it is sent to the Royal Court on the 1 October.

A bicycle has been stolen from a property in Jersey, police have said.

The orange bike, similar to the one pictured, was taken from a garden at the bottom of Old St Johns Road overnight on Tuesday 13 August.

Jersey has had fewer than five confirmed cases of measles in the past 10 years - with the island's vaccination rates exceeding figures set by the World Health Organisation, according to government figures.

It's been confirmed the UK has lost its measles-free status, following a fall in vaccination rates for the second of the two MMR jabs.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has blamed complacency by parents and the spread of what he calls "superstitious mumbo jumbo".

He is now ordering urgent action to ensure that children and young people in Britain are protected against measles.

His comments have been welcomed by Jersey's Health Department.

Guernsey's most senior politician has said it is reasonable to expect a more limited choice of fresh food imports in the weeks following Brexit.

President of the Policy and Resources Committee Gavin St Pier made the comments following a visit to the island on Monday by James Duddridge, a new minister in the UK's Department for Exiting the European Union.

During his brief trip, Mr Duddridge met with other senior politicians, the harbourmaster and business representatives.

Deputy St Pier said he did not expect "mass shortages", but added that "some impact on choice" comparable to storm disruption that the island has experienced in recent years might occur.

Jersey's sport, arts, heritage and culture groups could get a greater share of proceeds from the Channel Islands lottery.

Ministers want to support groups which have not benefited in the past and are planning to replace the association which runs the scheme with a UK body.

A new proposal would see UK group GrantScape, which gives out charity funds on behalf of local authorities, run the scheme from 2020.

The new division of the funds might see Jersey charities share 40% between them, while, arts, heritage, sport and culture bodies could receive up to 20% each.

If the States approves the scheme, GrantScape will set up a panel to decide how the money is distributed.
