  4. 'Mindless yobs' threw fireworks at police officers

    BBC News

Nottinghamshire Police said its officers "narrowly escaped injury" when they had fireworks thrown at them by "mindless yobs".

It happened in Top Valley, Nottingham on Thursday night while breaking up a bonfire party between Hogan Gardens and Augustine Gardens.

As well as fireworks, a bottle was thrown at a police van that smashed the window.

One suspect was detained and a rucksack was recovered with a hunting knife inside.

As more than 30 people were involved, police said the organiser will get a £10,000 fine for breaking the rules of the coronavirus lockdown.

In a separate incident, police went to Lytham Gardens, also in Top Valley, where a man was setting up a firework display.

Police said the fireworks were seized and a "scuffle" broke out between officers and the perpetrators, during which an officer’s helmet was stolen.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray and the organiser of the gathering will be issued a £10,000 fine.

As a result of these events, a dispersal order in Top Valley is in place until 16:00 on Sunday.

Nottinghamshire Police said there were other bonfire night related reports across the county yesterday, including another where fireworks were aimed at officers and a police car was hit by a firework.

Christine Busuttil, from the force, said: “It is really upsetting to see a small minority of people are willing to put both police officers’ lives at risk by aiming fireworks at them.

"This is completely irresponsible and incredibly dangerous."

A fire at a house in Leicester last night is believed to have been caused by a firework.

Leicestershire Police said they were called to a property in Chesterton Walk shortly after 20:10 after a member of the public reported a fire.

No-one was in the property at the time and no injuries were reported.

The force said firefighters were also at the scene and put out the blaze, which is being treated as deliberate and is being investigated to find a cause.

Det Sgt Dan Cumpsty said: "It is extremely fortunate that no-one was seriously injured in this incident and extremely fortunate that witnesses reported this as soon as they did averting any danger it may have caused to others.

"From initial investigations it is believed the fire was started by a firework."

  7. Nottinghamshire's 9pm alcohol sale ban no longer in force

    Gavin Bevis

    BBC News

Health bosses have confirmed the ban on selling alcohol after 21:00 in Nottinghamshire has been lifted.

The rule formed part of tier three restrictions which came into force on 30 October before the nationwide lockdown was announced.

Alison Challenger, Nottingham's director of public health, said: "We negotiated tier three arrangements for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. As soon as the national lockdown came into play, that superseded all earlier arrangements."

She added that whether Nottingham would return to the same tier three arrangements at the end of the national lockdown on 2 December would depend on the local infection and hospital admission rates.

    Newark Covid sign

Meanwhile, her Nottinghamshire counterpart Jonathan Gribbin told a media briefing this morning there were currently 400 Covid-19 patients being cared for at hospitals across the city and county.

He said: "Overall, across the whole of Nottinghamshire, transmission remains at levels that are of grave concern to us.

"Rates among people who are over 60 - and it's particularly from that group that transmission rates fuel pressures on our care system and hospitals - remain very high right across every part of the county."

He added the R number for Nottinghamshire sits somewhere between 1 and 1.1, slightly lower than the estimated UK figure which is between 1.1 and 1.3.
