The classic 1940 version of Pride and Prejudice - the first big-screen adaptation of Jane Austen's novel - is available to watch on iPlayer. It stars Laurence Olivier as Mr Darcy and the screenplay is by celebrated author Aldous Huxley. There may well be a question on who plays the role of Elizabeth Bennet!
So, with 2023 underway, we thought you might enjoy a quiz about Pride and Prejudice - the book, and its various adaptations - to get you in the mood for the movie, of which The New York Times said, “for pure charm and romantic diversion, for bubbling and wholesome life, we most heartily recommend this exquisite comedy.”
We enlisted Kathryn Sutherland, one of the world's foremost Jane Austen experts - Emeritus Professor at St Anne’s College, Oxford, and trustee of Jane Austen’s House Museum - to set fifteen rather tricky questions that should stretch the synapses of even the biggest Austen fans.
