Wimbledon recap: Berrettini beats Auger-Aliassime after Hurkacz stuns Federer

It's women's singles semi-finals day on Thursday and these are the two matches you can look forward to.

Ashleigh Barty v Angelique Kerber is first on Centre Court at 13:30 BST.

That's followed by Karolina Pliskova v Aryna Sabalenka.

Also on Centre Court is this mixed doubles quarter-final.

In the other semi-final, defending champion Novak Djokovic will play 10th seed Denis Shapovalov.

Djokovic had too much quality for Hungary's Marton Fucsovics and though the 34-year-old was far from his best, he still won 6-3 6-4 6-4 against 29-year-old Fucsovics, who was contesting his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Canadian Shapovalov beat Russian 25th seed Karen Khachanov to reach his first major semi-final, prevailing in five sets with a 6-4 3-6 5-7 6-1 6-4 victory.

Roger Federer's bid for a ninth Wimbledon title is over after he was stunned in straight sets by Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.

The Swiss lost 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 to the 14th seed, who has reached his first Grand Slam semi-final.

It is also the first time 20-time major champion Federer has lost a set to love at the All England Club.

And as we now know, Hurkacz will meet Matteo Berrettini in the last four.

Here is what Matteo Berrettini had to say after making the semi-finals: "I don't know [how it feels]. It's crazy. Thanks to Felix. I think we made a great match and I hope you guys enjoyed it.

"He's probably one of my best friends on Tour so it's never easy to play against him. We know each other pretty well. Today was really tricky. Good luck to him but I'm really happy for me.

"I just know I'm trying to win every match I play. Every match is difficult. It depends on the opponent. Felix today played some parts of the match better than me. I asked myself to be tough. I just cared about the win."

On facing Hubert Hurkacz: "It will be the first time for both of us on grass at Wimbledon. He beat Federer which means he's playing well but I'm feeling confident. Good luck to him and we will see."

There's a game on tonight at Wembley. Teenager Emma Raducanu, who reached the last 16 and was the last British player in singles' action, is among the 60,000 cheering on the Three Lions.

A journalist has asked Roger Federer whether not only would this be his last Wimbledon, but whether he would be retiring in the immediate future?

Federer replied: "No, it's just about having perspective. You need a goal when you're going through rehab with what I did. You can't think of the entire mountain to climb as once. You got to go in steps. Wimbledon was the initial first super step.

"For me, now that that's over, you just got to reassess everything. You have got to sit down, talk about it, what went well, what didn't go so well, where is the body, where is the knee, where is the mind?

"It was a struggle for me and putting in extra effort all the time, especially when things get difficult against Felix [Auger-Aliassime] in Halle or today against Hurkacz. I knew it was going to be really hard, to be honest.

"I've just got to talk to the team, take my time, not feel rushed by you guys [the media] or anybody else, for that matter. I've got to take my time, take the right decision, the one decision I want to take and where I feel most comfortable. That's where it leaves me. But, no, I hope not that that's going to happen. The goal is to play, of course."

Roger Federer has been speaking to the world's media after losing to Hubert Hurkacz and is quickly asked whether this will be his last Wimbledon?

He says: "I don't know. I really don't know. I've got to regroup. My goal was always for the last year and more to always try to play another Wimbledon.

"The initial goal, was to play last year, but that was never going to happen, plus the pandemic hit. I was able to make it this year, which I'm really happy about.

"With everything that comes after Wimbledon, we were always going to sit down and talk about it because clearly now Wimbledon is over. I've got to take a few days.

"Obviously we're going to speak a little bit tonight, depending on how I feel, then the next couple of days as well. Then we go from there. Just see, OK, what do I need to do to get in better shape so I can be more competitive?

"I'm actually very happy I made it as far as I did and was able to play Wimbledon at the level that I did after everything I went through. Of course I would like to play it again, but at my age you're just never sure what's around the corner."
