Life beyond death in the driest place on Earth

The Chinchorro are the very first people that inhabited the Atacama desert in Chile, the driest desert on Earth. Their 5,000-year-old mummies, dating thousands of years before the Egyptians, gained worldwide exposure in 2021 when UNESCO finally included them on the World Heritage List.

The inhabitants of Arica have long lived with their presence, literally only inches above their homes. And still today, scientists are looking for clues to try to understand their enigmatic remains, which carry many secrets to unveil.
