Oscars 2020: Reaction as Parasite triumphs

Parasite made history, Joaquin Phoenix got heartfelt and two stars dressed up in cat suits at this year's Oscars.

Here are some of the best jokes, speeches and skits from the evening.

Or at least one of them was.

Jonathan Pryce was up for best actor this year for his role opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Two Popes.

In truth that award was always nailed on for Joaquin Phoenix.

Like a lot of people in the room and around the world though, it seems, Pryce was pleased with who won best picture.

You might not have heard about this because hardly anybody has mentioned it in the past month, but no women were nominated for best director this year.

So Natalie Portman decided to take matters into her own hands.

The actress wore a black gown embroidered with the surnames of the women who would have been eligible in the category, having directed major feature films in the past year.

The names included: Lorene Scafaria (who directed Hustlers), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) and Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim).

It was Parasite's night at the Oscars on Sunday, but away from the ceremony it was a night for cats, dogs and turkey sandwiches.

The stars were busy getting their outfits signed, smuggling food and bringing along their pets to the red carpet and after parties.

Here's a look at 13 of the most eye-catching outfits.

Antonio Banderas may have lost out in the best actor stakes tonight but he feels that films with subtitles were the real winners.

Banderas was nominated for his role in the Spanish language film Pain and Glory, Pedro Almodovar's film about a director in decline.

He told the BBC's Colin Paterson Parasite's four wins show that audiences "don't care" about having to read subtitles if they feel the film is going to be worth it.

Yet more top-flight celebrities are arriving at Vanity Fair's famous post-Oscars party.

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, singer Billie Eilish, and namesake Billy Porter have all stopped to have their portraits taken in front of the magazine's logo.

Meanwhile, a queue of other stars snaked their way past the waiting media to get their pictures taken.

It seems most would rather pose for pics at this point than answer questions. And who can blame them?

Predictions of a clean sweep for World War One epic 1917 were misplaced as South Korean satirical thriller Parasite clinched four awards at Sunday's Oscars.

It became the first non-English language movie to win best picture - as well as prizes for best original screenplay, best international feature film, and best director for Bong Joon-ho.

So what else happened?

• Joaquin Phoenix used his podium speech for best actor to apologise for past behaviour and send a heartfelt message about the state of the world
• Brad Pitt got political as he collected a best supporting actor gong, the first acting Oscar of his career

• Laura Dern declared her best supporting actress Oscar the "best birthday present ever"
• Among the UK winners, Sir Elton John and songwriting partner Bernie Taupin won best original song for (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again from Rocketman
• And Roger Deakins won best cinematography for 1917

Celebrities are beginning to flood into one of the most prestigious Oscars after-parties, held by Vanity Fair magazine.

The event is traditionally one of Hollywood's most sought-after tickets.

Among those attending are Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Oh, and James Corden - who seems to have slipped out of his Cats costume and into something more becoming of a human TV star.

Clutching her Oscar, which was never really in doubt, Renee Zellweger told the press room her parents would be dancing around the room together at her win tonight.

She spoke about the process she used to become the troubled and fragile Judy Garland, saying: "The only thing I would do by myself for this would be to sing in the car trying to drive down the 405 bypass here in the traffic.

"Anyone who knews the 405 knows that’s a lot of time to practise."

The last time she won an Oscar was in 2004, for Cold Mountain, so what's changed since then?

"I was so busy I wasn’t in the moment, I’d just flown home for Bridget Jones 2 - I’m more present now.

"The time in between has helped me to appreciate this in a different way, what it represents is a bit different, this wanting to tell that story and to celebrate it."

There's been a lot of love for Bong Joon-ho's translator, Sharon Choi, tonight.

Three times she conveyed his messages of gratitude to the whole of Hollywood (he didn't get up the fourth time, though he did muster some boozy toasts in English himself to be fair).

It seems the people would like to hear Sharon in her own words soon.

There were gasps of delight in the press room when Bong Joon-ho's Parasite won best director and then best film.

Many had thought Sam Mendes' 1917 was a shoo-in, but there's been a groundswell of support for Parasite, the South Korean social comedy thriller which won last year's Palme D'Or at Cannes.

For an Oscars criticised over a lack of diversity, this is a positive outcome - the academy has landed its first non-English language film for the top prize.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, the darkly comic film depicts the brutally symbiotic relationship between the lives of a very wealthy and an impoverished family.

Bong Joon-ho told the press room: "For this film I just did what I've always done with great artists and all my actors - but we've had these amazing results [four Oscars out of six nominations].

"I feel like I'll wake up from this amazing dream."

The film-maker added he'd said at the Golden Globes that subtitles were a "one-inch barrier" but now thinks that with social media and YouTube, "we're all connected - a foreign language film doesn't really matter".

Each year, two Oscars are given out for sound design.

This year, best sound editing was won by Donald Sylvester for his work on Ford V Ferrari - aka Le Mans 66.

Sound mixing went to Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for 1917.

Joker star Joaquin Phoenix used his best actor acceptance speech to cast light on what he described as humanity's plundering of the natural world for resources.

He also touched upon his own behaviour - admitting that while he had been "hard to work with" in the past he was grateful for being given a second chance.

It's just gone 14:30pm in Seoul and thrilled South Koreans are hailing Parasite's winning night at the Oscars.

"Can't believe I am hearing Korean language at the Oscars," said a user on the South Korean web platform Naver.

The most searched term was "Bong Joon-ho", as more and more South Koreans celebrated the "historic victory".

"Congratulations Mr Bong, you are South Korea's pride," said one user, while another observed that "Korean films, dramas and music have taken over the globe,"

Billie Eilish didn't deliver the new Bond theme as we'd hoped but she did treat us to one of the funniest looks of the night.

Here she is looking utterly bemused by Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig's impromptu musical medley.

It's already being passed around social media as a response to a variety of unwelcome social situations...

Marshall Mathers performed Lose Yourself during this year's ceremony - and afterwards he congratulated Sir Elton John on his best original song win.

"I got to see my Uncle Elton tonight at the Oscars," Eminem wrote on Twitter alongside a snap of the pair. "Congrats on your win too, Sir!"
