  1. The best of an epic evening...

And with that, we draw this stunning night to a close. Today's 18 goals represent the most scored in a single day of a European Championship finals. Here is the best of what people had to say about an absolute rollercoaster ride...

France boss Didier Deschamps to Bein Sports: "It was a fight and it wasn’t easy. We gave them the two goals from mistakes. We tried to win it. It means we’re top and that’s the best position. We’re going to appreciate it and recover now as a new competition is starting."

Former England international Danny Murphy, on BBC Two: After watching tonight, I'd rather play Germany than France.

Ex-Germany player and coach Jurgen Klinsmann on BBC Two: If you go player by player and team by team in Germany and England, this is a 50/50 situation that could end up again in a penalty shoot-out.

Former Wales international Robbie Savage, on BBC Two: "What a night. This is why we love football."

  4. 'We can continue to improve'

    Portugal 2-2 France

Portugal boss Fernando Santos: "What I really liked was the team's collective behaviour. When I was asked what we had to do that was different from the game against Germany and I said it was to be like ourselves.

"We were strong, consistent, with a great spirit. We can continue to improve. In the second half we didn't start well but we regrouped.

"Now we have to think about Belgium, who are tough opponents. If we look at the rankings, they are first. But, let's evaluate and realise what we have to do for this match."

"Rest is very important, we have to recover so that they are fresh. We cannot use this as a handicap. Let's see if there have been any changes in Belgium, let's analyse the team and prepare for the game with the usual goal: to move forwards."

  5. 'I am just happy we got through'

    Germany 2-2 Hungary

Joachim Low, Germany coach: "We showed great morale, but we also made mistakes. It was good to see that we fought hard until we got the equaliser. It was a nervy match. We knew Hungary would give it their all. I am just happy we got through in this group."

  6. 'They fought like lions'

    Germany 2-2 Hungary

Marco Rossi, Hungary coach, speaking to M4 Sport: “It’s unbelievable that we’re disappointed after a 2-2 in Munich and that the Germans are celebrating. This speaks for itself. We’re disappointed, because we were very close to going through, and the guys would have deserved it.

“They’ve fought like lions throughout in all three matches, and they’ve made the whole country proud. We never feared the big names with whom we met; we stood shoulder to shoulder against everyone. No one can complain about our performance or attitude."

  7. 'We knew we could do better'

    Portugal 2-2 France

Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves: "We are champions of Europe. We knew we could do better. Once again thank the fans, it was an amazing atmosphere here in Hungary.

"The most important thing is that we are at the next stage. We went through a difficult period, we reacted well. France were never on top, we controlled the match well. There were no great moments of danger."

  8. Post update

    Portugal 2-2 France

France midfielder Paul Pogba to Bein Sports: "We're satisfied and the most important thing was to top the group. We managed that in a group that wasn't easy. We know we need to improve."

  9. 'Hard to find the words'

    FT: Germany 2-2 Hungary

Hungary goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, speaking to M4 Sport: “It’s hard to find words at the moment. We were so close to achieving something special, and naturally, I’m bitterly disappointed.

“We were under pressure, but we restricted Germany to very few chances. We reacted superbly after their first equaliser. We were so close. From the very start, we’ve focused on ourselves rather than our opponents. We’ve played three tight matches, and I’m disappointed that we haven’t gone through.”

  10. 'It's a new start of the tournament now'

    FT: Germany 2-2 Hungary

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

The fascination of knock outs. It's a new start of the tournament so forget about what happened in the groups, ups and downs, good and bad performances.

Now all that matters is to focus on the next game and to give it everything you have because you don't know what could happen. It's a completely different mindset now for the coaches and players. It brings another level of energy for everyone.

  11. 'A new competition is starting'

    Portugal 2-2 France

France boss Didier Deschamps to Bein Sports: "It was a fight and it wasn’t easy. We gave them the two goals from mistakes. We tried to win it. It means we’re top and that’s the best position. We’re going to appreciate it and recover now as a new competition is starting."

  15. Post update

    FT: Germany 2-2 Hungary

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

The moment Germany got a little more fluid, started taking people on and took a few risks here and there it looked better. But you could see that they were overthinking their situation and they were worried.

At a moment they tried to force it a little bit too much. Overall, Germany didn't create a lot, set pieces were bad, corner kicks were short and wasteful.

  16. 'I never doubted myself'

    Portugal 2-2 France

France striker Karim Benzema to TF1: "I never doubted myself, but I knew there were expectations of me from the country. I managed to score and I’m going to savour it with everybody."
