There is a growing campaign for the Bradford Mela, which attracted crowds of up to 100,000 in its heyday, to be revived.

    Bradford Mela performance

An event at Bradford’s St George's Hall today will look back at the multicultural festival as well as exploring the possibility of a comeback.

Rooted in South Asian arts and heritage the event has hosted some big name stars from the subcontinent and the UK’s South Asian music scene - as well as family activities, stalls, performances and food. However, it ended almost a decade ago due to funding and other factors.

The 2012 event was cancelled due to a waterlogged Peel Park, with council bosses saying at the time the park could take “years to recover” if it went ahead.

Champak Limbachia, who helped found the festival said: "It put Bradford on the international map. We had lots and lots of audiences that came from all over the country, and the diverse artists came from international countries as well."

He said he also believed the event would tie-in with Bradford's ambition to be UK City of Culture in 2025.

  5. Extinction Rebellion member has conviction quashed

A Lincolnshire protester has won her appeal after she was convicted of obstructing Horse Guards Road in London in 2019.

    Tents on the road

Extinction Rebellion member Helen Allen, 66, from Sturton by Stow, was convicted of obstructing the road without "lawful authority or excuse" on 9 October 2019.

Tents were placed outside the Treasury building during the protest (pictured above).

In February, she was handed a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £450 costs.

Today, the Crown Prosecution Service said it would not be contesting the appeal and her conviction was quashed.

It is the fourth Extinction Rebellion appeal to succeed uncontested in as many days.

The Supreme Court recently ruled that peacefully and briefly obstructing a highway for a genuine political cause was lawful activity.

  6. Body of missing diver found off Isles of Scilly

    BBC Radio Leeds

The body of a missing diver has been recovered from the sea off the Isles of Scilly, police have confirmed.

    Rob Dalby

Qualified scuba diver Rob Dalby, 55, from Huddersfield, failed to resurface while diving with his wife and friends on 28 July.

Family friend Peter Lau said the holiday was to celebrate the 40th birthday of Mr Dalby's wife, Melanie.

Mr Lau, who runs a West Yorkshire scuba club attended by the couple, said Mr Dalby got into difficulties while diving with his wife.

Paying tribute, he said Mr Dalby would be "sorely missed by all those who had the honour and the privilege to know him.

"Rob was a good and loyal friend, loving and caring husband and an all-round gentlemen. In stature and in personality, he was larger than life.

"He was one of a kind. He would literally do anything to help anyone at home, for friends and at work."

Devon and Cornwall Police said it was not treating Mr Dalby's death as suspicious.
