Thousands of free hampers containing surplus food from supermarkets and restaurants are going to be sent out in time for Christmas in Leeds.

Volunteers at The Real Junk Food Project say they want to "make a difference for a few families" in the city during the festive season.

They say for some people it's a matter of choosing between "food or warmth" over the Christmas period:

  5. Cat thrown from car into dyke saved by 'hero' dog walker

A drowning cat has been saved by a "hero" dog walker after being thrown from a car into a dyke in Doncaster.

    Honey

The dog walker was walking along Finkle Street when he saw the cat thrown from a black Honda car into Mill Dyke, according to the RSPCA.

The man "rushed to save the drowning cat from the water and managed to pull it to safety".

The cat, which was underweight and had an exposed abscess, was taken to a nearby vet’s for treatment and is now being cared for at the RSPCA's Doncaster and Rotherham branch.

    Mill Dyke

RSPCA Inspector Graeme Petty says: "There's about 15ft of land before you reach the water, so someone made a real effort to try and drown her.

"Had the dog walker not intervened I am sure she wouldn't have survived. His heroic actions saved her life," he adds.

    Honey

The cat, which has been named Honey, is said to be "doing well" and is now wearing a red jumper to keep her warm after her fur had to be removed.

Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to contact the RSPCA.
