Remember the events of 70 years ago with BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire remembers the 70th anniversary of Coventry Blitz with a special series.

Beyond The Blitz brings together a variety of features on-air and on our website up to and including the anniversary on 14 November 2010.

One of the main projects has been collecting 70 Stories for 70 Years.

This involved recording blitz stories from 70 people who remember the attack on the city in November 1940, so their memories are saved forever.

70 Stories for 70 Years

The stories were carefully and thoughtfully recorded and compiled and were broadcast on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire in October and November 2010. The memories have now been archived and become part of a special interactive map on our website, where you can listen to all 70 stories.

Click here to visit the map that shows where all 70 of the survivors were on the night of 14 November 1940. From the map you can see their photographs and listen to their recorded memories.

From Beyond The Blitz we also have a selection of galleries, which look at Coventry before the war and how it compares to the city we know in 2010. Many of our archive pictures have been kindly provided by the Coventry History Centre at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum.

Specially for the series, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire also made a Twitter page with a difference. We created a page which could have been used by our newsroom in 1940 - if the internet had been around then! - to broadcast national news and local blitz updates.

Using the social media site, which lets you report in no more that 140 characters, until 15 November we shared national news from 1940, accurate to the the date and time 70 years ago.

Alongside serious news, it also included theatre and cinema listings, the time of blackout for that particular day, and other stories hitting the headlines in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Our Beyond the Blitz series takes listeners back to the 1940s

In the week leading up to 14 November, on the radio we aired content relating to the war, old Coventry and how everyday life may have been in 1940. From a modern day family living on rations, to personal stories of loss and bravery, we commemorated the events of November 1940, along with the spirit of those survivors who went on to rebuilt the city.

On 14 November, for the first time, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire broadcast on air all night with a selection of special programmes to mark the anniversary and reflect on how it affects everyone in Coventry today.
